Oct 11, ’153:21 PMTomorrow I’m giving a very quick presentation at Cybersalon’s Radical Data, throwing a bit of generative art into the visualisation and data science mix. In fact, mostly I’ll be name-dropping some fellow digital artists.

Sep 28, ’153:45 PMThis Wednesday I’m giving a presentation on live-coding OpenGL for the Web using ClojureScript, at London Creative Coding. I’ll almost certainly visit Field and Max/MSP on the way.
Details at the Meetup page here.

Jun 26, ’151:51 PMNext week we’re working on a sound score for Shobana Jeyasingh Dance in a research and development project with King’s College London and the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. The project brings together choreography, robotics theory from KCL Informatics, and mechanical design from the Bartlett’s Interactive Architecture Lab.
The sound score is still on the drawing board, but will be the usual mix of Cycling ’74 Max and Ableton Live, with a bit of Max’s physics engine thrown in to explore some ideas of robotic underactuation. The audio setup will also be six-speaker ambisonic for a bit of surround-sound goodness.
The venue is the KCL Anatomy Museum, and it will be open to the public on Friday 3rd July, 2-4pm.
More information from the Interactive Architecture Lab, and a preview article at Dance UK.

May 11, ’158:44 PMWe’re presenting at Sound and Music‘s Creative Data Club tomorrow (Tuesday 12th), with the premise that data and code are the same thing, at least to the extent that what we do creatively can be described as “using data.”

Feb 8, ’157:05 PMFor anyone near Coventry this week: I’m giving a talk at the Centre for Dance Research, notionally about algorithmic thinking and choreographic process (but likely to digress slightly). Details here.

Jan 24, ’158:35 PMWe all go through a formative period in our early adulthood, where we “imprint” to cultural events and icons, and in particular, music. The 1970s saw musicians emerging from experimental rock and the avant-garde at the same time as an explosive development phase in electronic and digital musical instruments, giving us names such as Jean Michel Jarre (whose early electronic soundscapes utterly captivated me until he drifted into bombast), Vangelis (who at least did bombast with energy and flair) and Klaus Schulze (who could turn out lovely hypnotic long-form picture music when he wasn’t trying too hard to be Wagner). But really, all were playing on a stage set by Tangerine Dream.

Oct 18, ’149:45 PMOn November 8th I’m doing visuals and sound for two unrelated dance performances: Hacking Choreography 2.0 (with Kate Sicchio and Tara Baker) and Ring the Changes+ (with Chisato Minamimura and body>data>space), both as part of the Networked Bodies weekend at Watermans. Hacking was shown earlier this year in Brussels as a project supported by ICT & Art Connect; Changes was premiered at the Southbank Centre in September. The software platforms are completely different (Field vs. Quil – although both performances are Clojure-based), as are the projector rigs, so the setup/rehearsal schedule and changeover are going to be interesting. To add a bit more excitement, Kate and I will be simultaneously live-coding the same running system for Hacking during the performance (me on-stage, Kate NREPL’d in from New York).
Tickets available (for the performances, and for other events in the Networked Bodies weekend) here.
