Profound regional transformation of European wheat and maize production over the last decades

By Zsolt Pinke

June 16, 2022

A new study in Scientific Reports observed long-term trends in European cereal production from 1961 to 2017. As a result, the role of Central and Eastern Europe as a breadbasket of the world seems to have strengthened during the past decades due to the heavily increasing grain yields in the region. The implications of this for food security have been increasingly clear with the war in Ukraine, but escalating drought vulnerability of the southern part of Central and Eastern Europe also urgently triggers tangible solutions to mitigate climate challenge. Call for Panel: XIX Biennial IASC Conference 2023

We are pleased to announce theCall for Panelfor the XIX Biennial IASC Conference 2023. The IASC has been shaping the debate on alternative development pathways by way of putting the commons center stage. In times of profound crises, we have seen states being caught up in emergency mode. This unfolds, among others, in a tendency to respond within national borders, and it has brought the importance of building genuine resilience that leaves no one behind. Deadline: 1 September 2022

I have always been fascinated by tropical forests. Early on in my career, I studied forest succession, trying to understand the barriers that prevented its recovery, as well as the mechanisms that could accelerate this process. For that, I lived in a Mayan community where I realized two things: first, people have a variety of reasons for why and how they use and transform forests; some reasons are straightforward, but others are complex as they are linked to underlying factors. Second, to conserve forests it is crucial to understand the land uses that are replacing them. After that, my interests expanded beyond tropical forests, though they still fascinate me, and I try to restore them. Land systems science provides a useful framework for answering questions related to the reasons behind land transformation and the impact of humans driving these transformation. Currently, my research focuses on identifying the social and environmental factors that cause landscape changes at different scales, particularly in Mexico, with an emphasis on the transition from natural to agricultural systems. My aim is that the results of my studies provide useful information for the sustainable management of land systems. As a GLP member, I am part of the Social-Ecological Land Systems of Latin America Working Group.
