Welcome to the Swedish Society for Virology

The Swedish Society for Virology was founded in 2009 to provide a forum for all interested in virology, including clinical, pre-clinical, environmental, veterinary, plant and/or microbial (phage) virology. The aim of the Society is to promote the exchange of information and stimulate discussion and collaboration among scientists active in all aspects of virology.

The Society has from 2020 decided to launch “Pandemifonden” for the purpose of reaching out to the public with information regarding virus infections and pandemics, and also with the aim to raise funding that will strengthen Swedish research within virology, with the long-term goal to hinder pandemic caused by viruses in the future.

The society will present current information regarding upcoming events and meetings, grants, positions, and education opportunities. Contact webmaster if you want to announce for a meeting, positions, courses, jobs etc, that is related to virology.

National course in Molecular Virology

In connection with the Smögen meeting, there will be a National course in “Molecular Virology, August 22-24, for PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows. The course includes lectures by the Smögen meeting keynote speakers, and others, on a wide range of interesting virology topics, see preliminary program. 19th Smögen Summer Symposium on Virology

Come and join us at the 19th Smögen Summer Symposium on Virology, held August 25-27, 2022, and including Keynote talks from Michael Worobey, University of Arizona, on “Virus Evolution”, Timo Vesikari, University of Tampere, on “Viral Vaccine”s and Karen Mossman, McMaster University on “Tackling pandemics: what we can learn from bats”, see preliminary program. The first Sigvard Olofsson Award in virology

The first Sigvard Olofsson Award in virology is shared between Ka-Wei Tang at Sahlgrenska Academy, and Mahmoud M Naguib at Uppsala University. Ka-Wei’s research is about the genetics of EBV and Mahmoud’s research is on the genetics of zoonotic viruses including influenza A virus. Congratulations to both!
