Description:

Welcome The Literary London Society Annual Conference: CancelledIn light of the rapidly escalating situation concerning the COVID-19 novel coronavirus, and domestic and international travel restrictions, the Literary London Society Executive Committee and Conference Organising Committee have regretfully concluded that it is no longer practical or ethical to organise and hold the LLS annual conference, scheduled to take place at the London College of Fashion (LCF), 9-10 July 2020.Our decision to cancel the conference is based primarily on prioritising the well-being of organisers, attendees and staff supporting us at LCF. We are particularly mindful of the fact that the vulnerable, including those with underlying conditions and visible or invisible disabilities, would unlikely be able to attend the conference were it to be held.We are currently in discussion with LCF regarding postponing the conference and holding it in the summer of 2021. We are also considering devising alternative online activities for delegates over the conference period this July. We will provide updates as soon as we can.The Literary London Society (LLS) was founded in July 2011 to foster interdisciplinary and historically wide-ranging research into London literature in its historical, social, and cultural contexts, to include all periods and genres of writing and representation about, set in, inspired by, or alluding to central and suburban London and its environs, from the city’s roots in pre-Roman times to its imagined futures. The LLS grew from the long-standing Literary London annual conference and journal, both of which have been important forums for discussion of London literature since the start of the twenty-first century. The Society continues to publish the fully peer-reviewed open-access Literary London Journal, and organises an annual conference, normally hosted by the Institute of English Studies at the University of London. We are committed to the encouragement and sharing of research into London’s literature and cultural representations, within universities and beyond, and welcome as members anyone with an interest in this field. Our membership includes academics and students from a variety of disciplines, independent scholars and creative practitioners. We particularly aim to support graduate students as part of our academic community.Joining the society confers a number of benefits, including the opportunity to present a paper at the annual conference, and a newsletter with regular updates about relevant events and publications. Joining also helps us to ensure that the Literary London Journal remains freely available into the future, and to develop our other activities, including our popular regular reading group.Join the Society© The Literary London Society, 2011-2019 NewsCall for Papers: Discovery: 42nd Annual Virtual Conference, Nineteenth-Century Studies Association (March 11-13, 2021)Read MorePublication Announcement: Fairy Tales of London: British Urban Fantasy, 1840 to the Present – Hadas Elber-Aviram (February 2021)Read MoreLiterary London Journal Current Issue David Anderson, 'Speculative Topography: The Fantastical Overdetermination of Space in Iain Sinclair's Early Writing' Rebecca D'Arcy, 'Negotiating John Healy's The Grass Arena: Poverty, Inequality and Violence in the Immigrant Experience of the Irish in Britain' Anthony Paraskeva, 'Non-Linear Cinema and the Editing of Urban Space in the Fiction of Iain Sinclair' Rebekka Rohleder, 'Displacing Conflict: Work, the Self and the City in Monica Ali's In the Kitchen'2019 Conference Neighbours of Ours : Cities, Communities, NetworksCall for Papers2018 ConferenceThe 2018 Literary London conference was on 28-29 June 2018 at the Institute of English Studies in Bloomsbury.
