School Board Approves Phase 3 Plan - 2 Days In School, 3 Days at Home Per WeekContinuum of Education Phases for Schools in Del Norte CountySince late May/early June, certificated, classified, and administrative staff, along with students, parents, and community members have been providing input on re-opening options for schools. There have been multiple meetings at school sites (prior to the end of the year), steering committee meetings, Board meetings, surveys, etc. to discuss data and make recommendations. We also know that our current situation with COVID-19 is very fluid. As a result, we developed a "Continuum of Educational Phases" for the 2020-2021 school year (attached to this email). In this continuum, we link what school may look like with the California Resiliency Roadmap. In the continuum, you'll see that our educational programs this coming year could vary, at any time, between full distanceand full in-person, depending on orders from the Governor, and guidance/mandates from California Department of Public Health, California Department of Education, and the Del Norte County Public Health Officer.Given the information that we currentlyhave, we anticipate that school will most likely begin in Phase 3- Blended Learning. Last night the Board took action to approve a general model for Phase 3, which was to provide 2 days per week of in-person learning for all K-8 students, who attend schools within the Del Norte County USD, and 3 days per week of distance learning for all K-8 students in DNCUSD. This does not include Castle Rock, Community, or Elk Creek. The Board also allowed high schools to work with families, students, and staff to develop a model that works for their unique needs.What the Board did not do was to determine what the start of school would be. Given the quickly changing COVID-19 landscape, some districts set for full re-open have now completely closed and others set for full or partial closure have completely re-opened. We will work with our local public health officer, rely on legal requirements and mandates, and ultimately, make a final decision on which phase we will utilize when school re-opens. I anticipate the final re-opening phase decision will be made no later than the first week of August. It is important to know, too, that the district will be offering a full year, distance learning option for families whose children cannot attend in person due to COVID-19 reasonsOver the next three weeks, we will work with both bargaining units, interested staff, parents, students, site administrators, Board members, and others to plan for, negotiate, and implement a safe and successful Phase 3 potential re-opening.Thank you, all, for your suggestions, ideas, and patience, as we all navigate these new waters.
