The Center for Cellular and Molecular Engineering (CCME) was founded by Dr. Rocky S. Tuan in 2009. CCME is currently jointly run by Dr. Alexander and Dr. Hang Lin, with Dr. Alexander serving as Assistant Director as of September 2018. The mission of CCME is to foster interdisciplinary research utilizing principles of life sciences and engineering to develop tools and techniques for studying the development, function, pathogenesis and regeneration of musculoskeletal tissues. The current composition of CCME reflects this intent. CCME supports over 50 researchers including cell, developmental and molecular biologists, material and mechanical engineers, clinicians and veterinarians who are addressing a wide variety of topics from the basic, translational and clinical research realms.Basic research projects in CCME deal with skeletal development, mechanistic aspects of cell signaling and matrix biology, the biology of adult stem cells and reprogrammed cells, and the cell and molecular biology of tissue regeneration. The translational/engineering research of the lab is focused on cell-based tissue engineering and regeneration that includes the use of nanomaterials, scaffold design, cell-material interactions, mechanobiology, bioreactor and tissue chip technologies. The clinical research topics of interest include musculoskeletal rehabilitation, aging, post-traumatic osteoarthritis, heterotopic ossification, peripheral nerve repair, cartilage, bone and meniscus repair, and the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic infections.
