LOAD NEXT 20 ABOUT BIG-BJARKE INGELS GROUP

BIG is a Copenhagen, New York, London and Barcelona based group of architects, designers, urbanists, landscape professionals, interior and product designers, researchers and inventors. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. BIG’s architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes. Not least due to the influence from multicultural exchange, global economical flows and communication technologies, that all together require new ways of architectural and urban organization. We believe that in order to deal with today’s challenges, architecture can profitably move into a field that has been largely unexplored. A pragmatic utopian architecture that steers clear of the petrifying pragmatism of boring boxes and the naïve utopian ideas of digital formalism. Like a form of programmatic alchemy, we create architecture by mixing conventional ingredients such as living, leisure, working, parking and shopping. By hitting the fertile overlap between pragmatic and utopia, we architects once again find the freedom to change the surface of our planet, to better fit contemporary life forms.

Lorenzo joined BIG’s London office in 2016 to work on Google’s King’s Cross Headquarters. He is currently leading the design of CityLife Milan, a new 85,000 meter-squared development in Milan, Italy. Lorenzo received his Master of Architecture from the University of Florence, Italy, where he complemented his studies, with teaching positions in Architectural Design.

PARTNER ANDY YOUNG

Andy Young joined BIG in 2016 as Technical Director of the London office, and was named a BIG London Partner in 2021. He has over 25 years of experience working in the design and construction of large-scale projects in the UK and the Middle East. In addition to this, Andy provides technical assistance to the Copenhagen and New York offices. Since 2016, Andy has led some of BIG’s most prominent projects, including East Side Tower, an 80,000 meter-squared mixed-use tower in Berlin. Andy has also led the technical design of projects such as Google’s King’s Cross headquarters, and CityLife Milan, in addition to working on several large-scale projects in the Middle East. Prior to joining BIG, Andy was an Associate Partner at Rogers Stirk Harbour Partners. He was the Architect-in-charge of The Leadenhall Building, a landmark commercial tower in the City of London financial district, seeing the project from planning to completion in 2014. Andy is a UK Registered Architect and a Member of the RIBA. He received his Diploma in Architecture from The University of Westminster in 1993 whilst working at Michael Hopkins Partners.

PARTNER DARIA PAHHOTA

Daria Pahhota first joined BIG Copenhagen as an intern in 2008, became the group’s Chief Communications Officer in 2018, and now returns as the leader of BIG’s Global Branding and Communications after two years at the global architecture and engineering firm, SOM.

PARTNER GIULIA FRITTOLI

Named as BIG Landscape Partner in 2021, Giulia is an instrumental leader within BIG Landscape, who moved to BIG Copenhagen in 2020 after three years at BIG NYC. A Senior Landscape Architect with a multi-disciplinary background in urban design, architecture and landscape architecture, Giulia led the proposal for Toyota Woven City, investigating how recent technologies will shape the future of cities in regard to new forms of mobility, sustainability, ecology and human connectivity. Giulia first joined BIG in 2017 as project lead for the design of Islais Hyper-Creek proposal for the Resilient by Design competition, exploring solutions to adapt and protect the Bay Area from rain flooding, rising sea levels, and other environmental risks. Her approach brings focus to urban and natural systems, questioning and rethinking the traditional approach to landscape and city planning. Among her most relevant works are the masterplan for the Coliseum Arena in Oakland; the masterplan for Ravenswood Waterfront in East Palo Alto; and the Vision Plan for Downtown Brooklyn Public Realm. Prior to BIG, she worked for four years as a Landscape Designer and Urban Planner for the Dutch firm West 8. She has extensive experience in resilient master-planning and public space design at various scales. Giulia has led the design of the Duke University Sculpture Park, as well as the Concept Masterplan for Gulangyu Island in China, which contributed to the site being named a World UNESCO Heritage site. Giulia received her Masters Degree with honors from the Polytechnic University of Milan.

LOAD NEXT 20 SHOP ALPHABET OF LIGHT

Alphabet of Light starts from an abacus of essential geometries and forms a new font that translates into light, like an alphabet used to write and express thoughts, or a tool to give shape to spaces. Either straight or curved base modules made with precise geometric proportions allow for the combination of elements to build countless light structures, both essential and complex. It is an elementary principle generating an open system.

GOPLE LAMP

Gople Lamp enhances the beauty of glass, hand-processed according to an ancient Venetian technique that gradually turns white glass into crystal glass by combining both upon blowing, thus making each piece unique. Through an innovative and sustainable metal vacuum deposition process, finishes are avaliable in silver, bronze, copper and blue.

BULB FICTION

Bulb Fiction™ is inspired by the iconic incandescent bulb. The classic shape has been upscaled and designed as a whole unit, uniting socket and bulb into one form. The fixture hides the low energy light source, ensuring a comfortable soft light. The pendant consists of an acid treated opal glass shade, an aluminium suspension and an extra thick silicone cord. Bulb Fiction™ works beautifully as a single lamp, but it also looks fantastic when hung in a cluster, in a straight line or in staggered formations. Collaboration KiBiSi

KEGLEN

The Keglen Collection is a systematic design language for a wide range of lighting typologies. This family of lamps have similar characteristics, yet are maximised for their intended use with varied sizes and unique personalities. The main feature of the lamp is the organic shaped glass that sits perfectly underneath, as if shaped by physics and cohesive forces found in nature.

RIPPLE

Ripple is inspired by repeating elements found in nature that grow and expand in organic ways, like molecular growth. The lamp can grow or morph into different configurations, and the soft elements can be added to provide acoustic properties to suit the needs of certain interior environments.

TRUMPET

Trumpet is a fixture which accomodates many building services such as lighting, audio and ventilation. The subtle hyperbolic shape of Trumpet blends almost imperceptibly into the ceiling. The deeply recessed LED module provides lighting with minimal glare. With a specially developed surface with small laser-cut points, Trumpet creates an extremely homogeneous distribution of light. This versatility makes it ideal for use in offices.

SILVERBACK

Silverback is designed to create an interface between the architectural space and light. Neither integrated, nor flashy. Silverback has a soft water drop like shape that combines a metallic part with an opal white diffuser. The metallic part mirrors the ceiling or wall the fixture is mounted on, giving a unique morphed experience regardless of the background qualities. Collaboration KiBiSi

LA LINEA

La Linea is a flexible tube of light, capable of twisting and turning throughout endless distances for countless applications in a wide variety of locations. Elegant and sleek, La Linea is created for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Each individual modular element is 5 meters long but can be extended endlessly and seamlessly thanks to its concealed joints without visible shadows or signs.

VOXEL SOFA

Voxel Sofa is a modular sofa system expressed through the concept of a building block, a three dimensional pixel – a voxel. The grid-like system creates a family of units that can be configured into multiple seating scenarios, from single unit couch to a large, flexible configurations.

BRICK SOFA

The Brick sofa series is designed to have strong architectural references. It consists of a chair and a pouffe, as well as both a two- and three-seater sofa. The point of departure was a classic brick bond forming the cushion pattern. The cushions are tied together and fixed with a tailor-quality button made from fiber concrete. Collaboration KiBiSi

ROULADE SOFA

Roulade is a meeting between generations and genres, a meeting between mattress and Chesterfield, chair and couch. Roulade is a Swiss Roll turned sofa a contemporary, iconic and humorous character with a cozy and comfortable expression. Roulade is made from High Density foam cut into a fixed shape reminiscent of a rolled up mattress. It is upholstered with top class materials such as Kvadrat fabrics. Collaboration KiBiSi

LILLUM LOUNGE FURNITURE

Resembling the soft oval shape of a lily pad, the Lillum series welcomes you with a curious and inviting gesture made of honest materials and designed as a contemporary, urban expression. Lillum is designed for the modern, flexible and pragmatic time we live in, when outdoor furniture is not necessarily only used outdoors but can also blend in naturally in the living room, the lounge area of a restaurant or in the workplace.

VIA 57 LOUNGE CHAIR

VIA 57™ lounge chair was designed in reference to the VIA 57 WEST building designed by BIG in New York. As a flexible module, VIA 57 can be configured to fit into various interiors such as lobbies, receptions, lounges and private homes. The chair is composed of a steel frame embedded in molded soft polyeurothane foam. These two densities create the soft yet firm comfort. The wooden base creates an elegant finish towards the floor letting the chair almost float in space. Collaboration KiBiSi

SCOOP LOUNGE

Scoop is a contemporary chair for all spaces. The innovative gyroscope-like suspension system enables the user to tilt the chair forward and backwards, conveying a free, suspended feeling. The Y-shaped aluminum beam creates a visual and functional overlap between seat and base. Scoop merges craft with technology: the innovative technical edge increases comfort and maintains a clear and simple Scandinavian appearance. Scoop is available in a conference and lounge chair edition. Collaboration KiBiSi

XTABLE

The XTable desk is a piece of office furniture accommodating multiple working positions and daily reshuffling. All technical features are constructively integrated in the tabletop. It uses a century-old principle known from carjacks, ironing boards and other iconic tools. The principle is a radical redesign of the traditional office desk. XTable is designed with an optional storage solution for office supplies and other belongings. Collaboration KiBiSi

TOTEM SHELF

Totem Shelf is a freestanding bookcase consisting of a series of stacked volumes. Each volume is split diagonally into quarters, creating small frames or dioramas for personal belongings. The shelves come in wood, aluminum, chromatized, blackened, galvanized and stainless-steel variations.

PANDA

The wooden figure Panda is inspired by the Panda House BIG designed for Copenhagen Zoo. The new habitat for two giant pandas were created in the yin-yang symbol, based on the Chinese philosophy for balance and opposition within a simple shape. The wooden figure Panda mimics this simplicity, with the rotation of the upper mody and movability of the arms and legs. The Panda figure is available in the large or small size.

SKUM VASE

The vase Skum (Danish: foam) is modeled on BIGs inflatable art pavilion, which we designed for the Tuborg brewery in 2016. Similar to soap bubbles, porcelain balls are joined together to form an object with a strong character that will stand out in any interior. The Skum vase is available in four versions made of high-quality porcelain: in matt and glossy white, it scores with Scandinavian understatement, in Gold and Platinum it is a glamorous eye-catcher and limited to 99 pieces each.

HAV PORCELAIN

HAV is a multifunctional porcelain collection, inspired by one of Royal Copenhagen’s classic dinner services Seagull by Fanny Garde. HAV has a distinct fish scale ornamentation in a mix between a blue and greenish black colour, resembling the coastline shrouded in morning mist. By using an airbrush hand-spray painting technique, the scale decoration on HAV appears elegant in its tactility and modern in its expression. Collaboration KiBiSi

FRIDAY LOCK

Friday Lock is a smart home product which combines a minimal form and enhanced security features. Controlled via smartphone, the smat lock can automatically unlock a door when it senses the resident approaching, lock it as they leave, or allow them to remotely control who has access to the property. It is designed it to fit on the inside of almost any door in place of the traditional thumb turn. Friday Lock is the smallest and smartest retrofit lock to safeguard your home.

IFLASH ONE BIKE LIGHT

iFlash One is a bike light created for intuitive use and easy storage, accommodating the modern day on-the-go lifestyle. iFlash One uses magnets for easy fastening, effortlessly clicking onto a magnetic base that’s permanently fixed to your bike’s handlebars or seat post. Once connected, the light turns on automatically. When not in use, the magnets on the front and rear units pair them into one compact object, ready for storage. Collaboration KiBiSi

TAPER

The Taper Collection is a series of bathroom fittings that merge countertop, faucet and running water into one visually seamless design. Taper marries advanced engineering with a minimalist style that is deeply rooted in the principles of classic Mid-Century Danish design. The design takes cues from the practical function of the products – to facilitate the passage of water – by stripping the forms down to their most elemental essence. Collaboration KiBiSi

Over the last two decades, we have grown organically to a 500+ person family worldwide. Working on new projects, typologies and challenges we are joined by new BIGsters with the skills, experience and expertise our projects need! This is how we continue to grow and get better at what we do.

If you are interested in joining BIG, view our current opportunities here or sign up for updates here. We look forward to hearing from you!

BIG L transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries by weaving together building and landscape, planning, and programming, indoor and outdoor, public and private, to generate unforeseen typologies and synergies between the built and the grown. We develop generous amenities for all through collaborative processes to create places people are proud of, love, and care for, allowing them to thrive through constant renewal fostered by the communities they serve.

BIG L engages in the adaption and mitigation of climate change, focusing on addressing sea level rise and storm surge risks threatening our coastal cities. The scale, both spatial and temporal, at which those phenomena occur forces us to rethink the ways landscape designers, architects, and engineers seamlessly collaborate and join forces with governments, agencies, and communities for a fruitful public design process.

BIG L engages in a broad range of mandates including placemaking, biophilia, coastal resiliency, master planning, and future-proofing projects. To make these visions come true, we strategically engage stakeholders, communities, institutions, and the broader design field during our design process. BIG L’s design approach layers graphic and systemic studies to reconcile the aesthetic and the dynamism of nature and cities, tailoring outdoor spaces that look different because they perform differently.

One of BIG L’s main goals is to bring nature into the unexpected by creating hybrids of landscape and architecture. This is achieved with inventive landscape typologies, from residential to work spaces, inviting people to (re)connect with nature and the elements.

Engineering BIG ENGINEERING

With a holistic design approach, our engineers and architects collaborate at every step of a project from sketch through construction, bringing the art and science of design together to advance both beautiful and practical design iterations. BIG E has worked on over 70 projects, with experience across building typologies around the globe. We bring clients integrated engineering, using all primary structural materials, MEP, and technical simulations. Sustainability is integral to this process and used as a benchmark measure for all projects from day one. Our closely aligned process development allows our projects to develop cost, risk, and schedule certainty at an earlier stage of the design, while coordinating with the client on all aspects of the project through one point of communication. BIG’s collective approach leverages a shared culture, workspace and language, allowing us to work more quickly toward one goal—a better project.

Structures
BIG E offers structural engineering services from concept to construction, both substructure and super structure. Our most recent projects include Europe’s most sustainable factory for the furniture manufacturer Vestre, Paris Parc Science and Innovation Hub for the Sorbonne University, and a 190,000 SF student housing project for A Place To in Esbjerg, Denmark. The Structures team has the skills and experience to sensitively detail special structures that require a greater level of analysis and coordination such as slender staircases, lightweight footbridges and elegant, long span roofs.

MEP
BIG E offers full scope MEP for the Nordic region from concept through to construction, and early-stage design in other regions of the world. The team has provided MEP services for BIG’s new 50,000 SF headquarters in Denmark; Toyota Woven City in Japan, the world’s first urban incubator dedicated to the advancement of all aspects of mobility; and a new student center at Johns Hopkins University. BIG E’s early involvement establishes important principles for each project, allowing for the necessary technical space and routing to be incorporated in the concept while the architectural and structural designs are still fluid.

PROJECTS The Plus

The Plus aims to be the world’s most sustainable furniture factory, and the first industrial building in the Nordic region to receive BREAM Outstanding, the highest environmental certification. To achieve the client’s ambitious sustainability goals, BIG E worked closely with BIG architects to design a full timber superstructure for the factory and offices that significantly reduces the embodied carbon of the building. Timber is carried into the interior finishes, allowing the architecture to celebrate the material as an honest expression of structure-architecture integration. BIG E is producing full construction documents for the concrete (foundations and ground slabs) as well as structural steelwork for the  feature helical staircase in the inner courtyard.

PROJECTS Aarhus Clock Tower

While working with BIG Architects on the residential Aarhus Clock Tower in Denmark, BIG E’s Structure team was met with the design challenge of a difficult geometry that did not lend itself to traditional Danish precast construction. The geometry of the building is such that the plan at the roof is rotated by 45 degrees compared to the plan at the ground, with the transition taking place across six stories in the center of the building. BIG E studied a range of options to optimize buildability, resulting in the use of in-situ concrete for the slabs—an unusual approach for a building in Denmark. The efficiencies of precast were lost by the variation in slab geometry, so this approach led to a more cost-effective solution for the client. BIG E was responsible for the design through to the end of Projektsforslag (equivalent to detailed design), before handing over to the contractor’s engineers.

PROJECTS A Place To

A Place To is a student housing project off the coast of Esbjerg, Denmark, with a very short construction timeline. BIG E maximized efficiency by designing the three tower structures using the common concrete core, columns and flat slab approach. However, the team innovated the traditional tower construction system by introducing maximum use of precast concrete elements. While the central core is an in-situ concrete cylindrical extrusion, the design achieved a flat slab construction with precast concrete SL deck elements. These wedge-shaped elements span from the core to a perimeter upstand edge beam, incorporated within the precast element. For this client, with this geometry, the use of precast concrete led to a much shorter construction time, a more cost-efficient building and a complete integration of the structural and architectural solution. BIG E was responsible for full construction documents for the structure and design of MEP systems through to the end of Projektsforslag stage (equivalent to detailed design).

PROJECTS The ORB

The ORB was a temporary art installation built at the Burning Man Festival in 2018. The installation was a 25 M diameter inflated fabric structure, supported on an inclined, 30 M tall steel central support. The whole structure was supported on a steel baseplate, tied to the ground with temporary screw piles. Embodying Burning Man’s ethos to “Leave No Trace”, everything was designed to be fully assembled and disassembled on site, returning the desert to its exact original condition after the event. BIG E designed, procured, built and removed the full structure in challenging desert conditions, working with Area Cubica, fabric specialists.

FORMGIVING A concept design tool to evaluate architectural massing

The main challenge for a structural engineer in the Formgiving, or concept design, stage is that the pace of iteration only allows for relatively superficial hand calculations and rules of thumb to be employed. There is not enough time to discretise the massing into a structural model to be able to run it through a finite element program. This is a slow process. Hand tool calculations and sketches can provide input at this stage but quickly become overwhelming for more complicated systems, particularly when massing updates happen daily, hourly or by the minute.

This is the motivation behind the development of the new Formgiving tool, to improve simplicity, robustness and speed of BIG E feedback. It’s applicable to any given massing and independent from third party analysis software, making it fast and reliable. The implementation is based on rules-of-thumb and hand calculation methods but the feedback is instant. Even for the largest structures ( 200 m), the response time has been less than 10 seconds.

STADIUM A parametric design tool for bowl design

A stadium is a true example of structure being architecture. In our approach, BIG E is directly involved in the massing and layout of the stadium bowl, as well as the structure supporting the bowl. Our parametric design tool allows us to quickly respond to changes in seat locations, sightlines, access requirements and building massing, giving the architectural team the analysis they need to create the best spectator environment.

Architecture

BIG is a Copenhagen, New York and London based group of architects, designers, urbanists, landscape professionals, interior and product designers, researchers and inventors. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. BIG’s architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes. Not least due to the influence from multicultural exchange, global economical flows and communication technologies that all together require new ways of architectural and urban organization. We believe that in order to deal with today’s challenges, architecture can profitably move into a field that has been largely unexplored. A pragmatic utopian architecture that steers clear of the petrifying pragmatism of boring boxes and the naïve utopian ideas of digital formalism. Like a form of programmatic alchemy we create architecture by mixing conventional ingredients such as living, leisure, working, parking and shopping. By hitting the fertile overlap between pragmatic and utopia, we architects once again find the freedom to change the surface of our planet, to better fit contemporary life forms.

Products FRIDAY LOCK

The success of any consumer electronic product depends on three main factors: the design, the features and the usability. However most products today are over designed and have too many features, thus creating a complex interface and ultimately decreasing its ease of use.

With Friday Lock, we focused on creating a smart and simple design that doesn’t shout, “I’m a very intelligent object on your door” with flashing lights and other tech gimmicks. Instead we optimized the most important features, kept the design simple with a nod to the classic door knob and most importantly, designed it to be as small as possible.

BIG IDEAS BIG IDEAS Information Driven Design

BIGs design process always starts by identifying the key criteria of a project: What is the biggest problem what is the greatest potential? Rather than arbitrary aesthetic or stylistic prejudice, all decisions are based on project specific information Information Driven Design.

Our effort as architects is sandwiched in the window of opportunity between analysis and implementation. And our influence happens in the translation from information to material. In an attempt to increase our sphere of influence on our built environment, we have established BIG IDEAS.

BIG IDEAS is an internal technology driven special projects unit, expanding the traditional scope of the architect into the realm of information and material. BIG IDEAS explores new intellectual territory in both the digital and material realm through three specific areas.

PRODUCT DESIGN

On the other end of the spectrum where the design intelligence gets manifested into the material world, we have increasingly encountered that our imagination was limited to what was already on the shelves. Through our collaboration as part of KiBiSi our design partnership with Kilo Design and Skibsted Ideation we have explored personal technology, urban mobility and furniture. With BIG IDEAS we feel we can close the gap and really make our interest in product design a literal extension of our efforts in architecture. The Friday Smart Lockis the latest product developed in partnership with Friday Home.

TECHNICAL SIMULATION

As daylight analysis directly influences the building geometry and as studies of thermal exposure, conditions the building envelope, we are increasingly relying on technical simulations that would traditionally be part of the engineering scope. To speed up the feedback loop between design and analysis, between trial and error, we have internalized the environmental analysis into our own office. Daylight, sunshine, thermal exposure, airflow, turbulence, wind, space syntax and traffic flow are technical simulations we now control to enable ourselves to make designs that are literally shaped by the forces that surround them. We still collaborate with the best technical experts to tap into the cutting edge at the horizon of the profession, but we have found it necessary to educate ourselves to wield the digital tools of design. Not just building information management or digitally aided design but also environmental simulation must become part of our architectural tool kit.

Our line of investigations from the Shenzhen Energy Headquarters to the Hanwha PV Plant to the Cit du Corps Humain, has provided us with a parametric design engine that allows us to tailor building envelopes and faade geometries to respond to different climate conditions across the globe. Our expanded parametric design tools are helping us start to formulate a vernacular architecture 2.0 through engineering without engines.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

Rather than accepting the inhibitions from the architectural scope starting too late and leaving too early missing out on both research and production with BIG IDEAS were are starting a new journey to explore new intellectual territory in both the digital and material realm.

In collaboration with Danish Technical University BIG IDEAS resurrected the idea of the giant smoke rings for the Copenhagen Power plant.
