Things to consider

Upfront costs. The lender is giving out this loan because it wants to make money off of it. Because of the nature of the loan – the long period it must typically be carried – you can expect hefty fees upfront. These usually come out of the equity, directly impacting how much cash you will get.

No tax payouts. Usually the payout you get from this type of loan is not taxed. This can be a real boon to money-strapped seniors looking to land enough money to live out their later years. This is one of the major reasons that reverse mortgages have become popular.
