RD400 gas tank cleaning This gas tank is in pretty good shape on the inside - previous owner poured oil in to stop rust. Still there was some rust and sludge inside, that wouldn t be good for a running bike. After flushing the tank with soapy water, I found some foam cushions on the street, somebody left them for the trash man to pickup. I beat him to it.This tank is not pretty but the painter said he can take care of the exterior. It was up to me to prep the interior. I put a handful of nails and screws inside then closed the cap. This is the start of the foam wrapping process. Here the tank is covered with foam. Next I secured the foam around the tank with rope. Then it went into the clothes dryer for a spin. No heat, just spin. The foam packed around the tank enough so that the tank didn t bang around in the dryer. The tank just spun around and around with the screws and nails moving around inside it, knocking off the crud and rust. After the spin, I removed the foam, put it in the trash bin and cleaned the inside of the tank with soapy water. The soap is a degreaser. Simple Green, Krud Cutter and others will do the job. After rinsing and drying the tank, a coat of KBS tank seal was applied. Eight ounces was more than enough, drain the excess after all interior surfaces are covered.Next step - new paint and decals. Posted 5 months ago, 0 notes TM34 Jetting for H2 s Mikuni TM34 s are great carbs. They perform well and they look cool in a modern way. Flat slides on an H2!Jetting TM34 s can be a major headache. Mikuni VM30 s are stock H2 carbs. VM34 s are a popular upgrade with a lot of experience and info documented on the internet.TM34 s - There s not much info! When I bought my TM34 s the jetting was stock (what Mikuni provides with new carbs) which is not even close for an H2.I used this Kawasaki Triples chart that includes a few TM34 setups: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KYLqZ66e6goihzMcb_7rXIU8AsyQp9TLn3p5B8z0a_4/edit#gid=0The jetting might look kinda similar but the needle jet sizes make a huge difference. I think the needle jet size is the main piece of the puzzle. The needle jet supplied with the carburetor is 389 Series Q-2. Note: When changing needle jets, you must buy 389 Series. Other needle jets won t fit the carb properly.Needle jet size varies based on the letter and the number. Alphabetically, the earlier the letter, the smaller the orifice. 389 Series jets start with O (the letter). O-0 is the smallest size, O-2 is next, etc. Here s a list of 389 Series needle jets for sale at Niche Cycle, illustrating the range of sizes from smallest to largest: http://www.nichecycle.com/ncs/categories/carburetor/mikuni-parts-by-category/jettting-tuning/needle-jets/785-24001-389-series-needle-jet-by-mikuni.htmlI spoke with several people and Chris in Florida (aka Soflah2b on the triples forums) was most helpful for my setup. His H2 was ported with chambers and he ran the smallest needle jets available, O-0. Going from the Q-2 supplied with the carbs to O-0 is a shocking difference and might worry a tuner about seizing the motor. Chris told me he would go to even a smaller size needle jet if one were available. To be safe(er), I started with O-2 needle jets. The bike ran a lot better but it was still rich in the mid range. Needle jets primarily affect to throttle. I ordered O-0 s tried again and the bike ran much better. Onto the needle (it fits inside the needle jet). 6-Series are the proper length needles for TM34 s. There are several jet needles that are common for H2 s with TM34 s. They include: 6DH2, 6DH3, and 6DH4. After much fine tuning I settled on 6DH3 s for my lightly ported H2 with chambers.Months later I decided to install a set of reeded and ported cylinders. John Aylor had done the reed conversion. Reeds are one-way valves versus piston ported (original setup) which allows the intake gases to go in and out of the intake. The piston port setup may allow double carburetion, particularly at lower throttle settings. For that reason, I went richer on the jet needle with the reed top end. After many hours of careful tuning and riding, staying on the rich side and working down, the needle was raised (getting richer from non-reeded) 1.5 slots. One clip change plus a washer under the needle. Now we were getting somewhere! The bike had great tractability without the low end richness (misfire sound). I had been running TNT chambers, which I find loud and top-end oriented. In my neighborhood there s not much opportunity to ride a loud H2 at high rpm s, particularly with a 35 mph speed limit. I have to get on the freeway, which generally has a 55 mph speed limit! The final touch was installing a set of Jim Lomas street pipes. They are long with fat midsections and they are great for torque! And they are surprisingly quiet. Jim Lomas pipes aren t for everyone. Some people don t like long pipes, others don t like quiet pipes. OK for them. Here are my final TM34 jetting settings as of Spring 2020:- Pilot jets 45 with airscrew one turn out- Needle jets O-0- Jet needles 6DH3 on the 3rd (center) clip- Main jets 250The main jets might be a bit on the rich side, however I rarely go full throttle and there hasn t been a problem with plug fouling or other signs of main jet richness. Here s an excellent chart for Mikuni needles and needle jets:http://kawatriple.com/carb/mikunineedle.html John Aylor in Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Classic Motorcycle Mechanics magazine had a build of a KH250 Kawasaki triple with an H1 motor. They went with John Aylor s reeds. Here s a sidebar with information from John, published in the July 2019 issue. Posted 1 year ago, 14 notes RD ignition info from Spec2 SPEC II offers a replacement coil kit. The weakest link in the stock ignition is the coils. The points actually work pretty well if the crank is in good shape. Properly set and lubricated, the points should be checked with a timing light every 1,000 miles. Use automotive distributor cam grease. The SPEC II coil kit is $99.95. It comes pre-wired including the hi-tension leads and caps. The kit includes brackets that fit the stock frame mounting holes. The coils mount in the stock location.SPEC II offers 2 styles of real CDI ignitions systems. The German ignition described below and a racing only magneto style ignition. The racing magneto comes complete with coils and an aluminum rotor with magnets. It is much lighter than the German ignitions flywheel. The racing magneto does not offer a charging system. It is $449.90.The German ignition comes with the rotor and stator that replaces the charging system on the crankshaft. Since this is a magneto style system, there is a lot more current available to charge the battery, run lights, etc. It, also, comes with a new rectifier/regulator and special coil. This ignition is a CDI. This type of system offers a much faster rise time than the stock inductance type ignition system. This dramatically extends plug life and greatly reduces high rpm mis-fire.Though the $499.00 price produces sticker shock, it really is a redesign rather than just an upgrade. Here s a customer s picture of his SPEC II equipped RD400F. Posted 1 year ago, 0 notes 1978 RD400 Crystal Silver paint matching Yamaha s Crystal Silver is a hard color to match. I don t buy paint from the continental US because I live in Hawaii and the shipping cost is prohibitive.I found two suggestions on the net:- Chrysler silver 1732- Dupli Color BCC0410 Bright Silver Metallic (PS2)Here s a picture of my old 1978 RD400 taken around 2005. I sold the RD because my living situation meant it would have to sit in a parking lot under a cover. Now, 14 years later, I have another 1978 RD400 project bike that I m anxious to get onto the streets of Honolulu. Spec2 rearsets Spec2rearsets for the RD250/350/400 are $299.95.Rearsets for the RD400F, SR500, and RZ350 are $339.95.We have all the normal accessories for the Yamahas. From steering head bearings($39.95), steering damper kits($89.95 to $159.95), shocks, high output coil kits (fully wired and bracketed-$99.95), coils separately w/o wires are $25.00 each, to fiberglass fenders and seats. We offer engine services as well. Crank rebuilds with welding tend to run about $590.00. Porting runs anywhere from $300.00 to $700.00. Our Stage II port is by far the most popular and the most bang for the buck. It runs $500.00 for both cylinders. Cylinder boring runs $80.00 for each cylinder plus the price of the piston kits. The best way to place on order is to call and after the message, just start talking. If I am within earshot, I will pickup. If not, leave your phone number and I will call right back.Contact information:E-mail: spec2is@verizon.netPhone: New phone as of 2020: 747-257-5129 Spec2 chambers for Kawasaki Triples Spec2 makes 2 types of chambers for the Kawasaki triples. The Classics at $599.95 and the F1 s at $899.95. The primary difference is the silencing mechanism. The F1 s feature longer stingers with detachable aluminum sleeved silencers. The Classics have a stinger and baffle inside of a 2" tube. The longer stingers of the F1 s produce a little more mid-range. But, the overall performance is about the same. The chambers are supplied unpainted. The first photo shows a customer s restored H1. It features SPEC II s classic chambers. Here s a photo of a 1972 H2 with the F1 chambers.I have included a picture of my old H2 dragbike. I set the National Record in 1974 in the Altered class. This class required the stock footpegs. Things have sure changed since then. This is a 1974 H2 with a custom paint job similar to Eddie Lawson s racebikes of the early 1980 s.
