They have all attained great heights professionally, yet they retain a personal humility that displays deep regard for others’ dignity. Let’s now return to why and how humility is an extraordinary power for leaders in business, as well as in so many other endeavors.It is my belief that the exceptional achievements of the CEOs I interviewed were fueled not only by hard work and knowledge, but by their personal humility. I believe this because of Collins’s (2001) research and because I have heard hundreds of enthusiastic and unsolicited stories from people who worked with leaders who displayed regard for others’ dignity. Let me share just one comment that is typical of the way in which a leader’s humility affects other people:My colleague and I were honored to receive an invitation to Sally Jewell’s swearing-in ceremony at the White House for her appointme nt as secretary, US Department of the Interior, under President Obama. Sally had invited us out a day early, and on arrival to the Department of the Interior we were delighted to see Sally’s new photograph, framed and hanging right below President Obama’s on the wall. As we whipped out our cameras to take a photo, we were immediately surrounded by the building security team, not because we were a threat, but because they wanted to know how we knew her, since she had only arrived a few weeks earlier. The security guard informed me that he had served at this post for 20+ years and had never met the likes of Madam Secretary Jewell. He told us that on her first day, she came into the building lugging her two large suitcases, wearing running shoes . . . no car service, no taxi . . . she had ridden the subway with suitcases in tow. He went on to say she dropped her bags, introduced herself to all the staff, and wanted to know their names and how long they had worked there. He added, “That’s not even the strangest thing! Do you know she comes down to the entrance of the building to greet people coming into the building in the morning? She walks everywhere, always on the go.” But what was most impressive to this employee was that by week two, Sally not only knew his name, she knew about his wife, children, and grandchildren . . . also by name. “Never, he said, had anyone ever asked him such things, let alone made him feel like a part of the team.” He was excited to work with her, offering her the best service he could. And he wanted to know all about her and if they could expect this type of connection throughout her service.
