MoreBATON ROUGE Due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency, the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) is waiving penalties for state sales tax returns due in April and May.The penalty relief applies to state sales tax returns and remittances due April 20, 2020 (for the March tax period), and May 20, 2020 (for the April tax period). State sales tax returns are due on the 2oth day of the month following the applicable tax period. LDR will waive penalties for state sales tax filers who submit their March 2020 and April 2020 returns, and remit the sales tax and any interest owed, by June 30, 2020. If a taxpayer cannot remit the sales tax and interest by June 30, they will still be eligible for penalty relief if they enter into a payment installment agreement by June 30.Read Revenue Information Bulletin 20-012 for more information.BATON ROUGE To protect the health and well-being of taxpayers and employees, the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) will implement social distancing guidelines and other safety precautions when in-office customer service resumes on Monday, May 18, 2020.As part of the Phase One reopening of state government facilities, LDR will resume in-person customer service at its Baton Rouge headquarters and its regional satellite offices in Lafayette and New Orleans. To make the transition as safe as possible during the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency, the department has put the following precautions into place: Visitors and employees will have their temperatures checked upon entering the buildingo No one with a temperature of 100.4 or above will be allowed past the temperature checkpoint Employees and visitors are asked to wear masks while in the buildingo All employees providing customer service will wear maskso Any visitor who does not have a mask may request one from the department Hand sanitizer will be available at stations throughout the building All public spaces, including the customer service area, will observe strict social distancing guidelinesVisitors to the LDR satellite offices in Lafayette and New Orleans will benefit from all the safety procedures listed above and may encounter additional measures implemented by the managers of those buildings.During the Phase One reopening, staff and visitors will be limited to 25% of facility capacity. Taxpayers who wish to avoid delays are encouraged to take advantage of the online customer service options on the LDR website, www.revenue.louisiana.gov. BATON ROUGE With the federal government preparing to distribute economic stimulus funds to most Americans during the COVID-19 public health emergency, the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) is warning taxpayers to be wary of potential scams to steal their money.Phishing scams are among the most common fraud tactics. The goal is to acquire personal information, such as Social Security numbers, to commit identity theft. The unfortunate reality is that there will always be criminals trying to take advantage of unsuspecting citizens during a crisis, Secretary of Revenue Kimberly Lewis Robinson said. Neither the Louisiana Department of Revenue nor the IRS will contact any taxpayer to ask for personal information, and no government agency will charge a fee of any kind for the delivery of stimulus funds. The U.S. Department of the Treasury says on its website, If you receive calls, emails, or other communications claiming to be from the Treasury Department and offering COVID-19 related grants or stimulus payments in exchange for personal financial information, or an advance fee, or charge of any kind, including the purchase of gift cards, please do not respond. These are scams. Louisiana residents who suspect they are victims of identity theft can take steps to protect themselves by reporting the crime to the police, reporting suspected fraud to the three major credit-reporting bureaus, and submitting a Louisiana Identity Theft Affidavit to the LDR Criminal Investigations Division. Review the LDR Identity Theft Checklist for more information.
