Department of Medicine Advancing research and patient outcomes while training the next generation of leaders in internal medicine Department of Medicine Advancing research and patient outcomes while training the next generation of leaders in internal medicine The Department of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine consists of ten internal medicine specialty divisions. An accomplished team of physician educators trains highly skilled, compassionate generalists and specialists to be the future leaders in clinical practice, research and academia. Education The Department of Medicine values broad-based training of students, residents and postdoctoral candidates to fulfill local, state, national and international needs for health care providers in general and specialty fields of internal medicine. Research An interdisciplinary approach to science is emphasized within this department, as faculty and trainees are committed to the advancement of internal medicine practice through cutting-edge research and clinical trials to discover new, advanced therapies for patients and the field. Clinical Care Faculty and students within the department deliver high-quality patient-centered care to a diverse population in the areas of preventative and interventional care. Optimal patient outcomes are achieved through interdisciplinary efforts among faculty providers, clinical and support staff, and the patient. IU’s Grand Challenges Precision Health Initiative incorporates key Department of Medicine faculty into the genomic medicine and cell, gene and immune therapies programs of the initiative to better understand the multiple factors that contribute to a person’s health. With this research, IU will strengthen leadership in the field and enhance the well-being and economy of Indiana. The Department of Medicine is involved in graduate medical education primarily through its Internal Medicine Residency Program and the unique Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program. The Internal Medicine Program consists of three tracks: primary care, research and preliminary medicine, and the program accepts 36 trainees for each track per academic year. The Medicine-Pediatrics Program accepts 14 trainees each academic year. These residency programs offer access to a large and diverse patient population through IU School of Medicine’s partnership with four Indianapolis hospitals, including the IU Health system.In addition, IU School of Medicine sponsors a Transitional Year Residency Program for applicants who are unsure on a career path, and many fellowship programs are available for more focused training through the department’s 10 specialty divisions.
