Welcome to Our CommunityCongregation Kehillat IsraelA Participatory Reconstructionist Jewish Congregation On August 1, 2020, KI welcomes Rabbi Matthew Kaufman as Congregation Kehillat Israel’s new rabbi. It marks both a new beginning for our community and the return to KI of one our own.For the past eight years, Rabbi Kaufman has been the rabbi part-time for Congregation Iyr HaMelech, in Kingston, Ontario. There he led Shabbat worship and adult education for a congregation made up largely of faculty from Queens University.He was previously the rabbi full-time for the Lodzer Centre Congregation in Toronto where, among other things, he helped revitalize the congregation, developed programming for younger families, and attracted dozens of new family members. He received his rabbinic ordination from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.In addition to being an experienced spiritual leader, Rabbi Kaufman is also an accomplished scholar. He earned a PhD in Humanities from York University in Toronto, with a focus on Jewish intellectual history. He has been a visiting scholar at Michigan State University and other institutions.We look forward to Rabbi Kaufman’s leadership, wisdom, and warmth. Starting out as the new rabbi at a congregation is an exciting opportunity. Doing it in the middle of a pandemic presents unique challenges that we will tackle together.
