[12O LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!] —Psalm 84:10-12We live in a society that has overrated the enjoyment of the perishable, and even true believers can easily forget what is the source of our greatest and only lasting pleasure.In fact, God gives us legitimate temporal pleasures in order to increase our appreciation for eternal pleasures. For our flesh cannot appreciate in its proper dimension the benefit of the gifts our soul receives from God. Imagine that you are just a few feet away from the breathtaking view of Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon, and a chill comes over your entire body. What should happen is that you think something like this: O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth. If you have granted me these pleasures on this side of eternity, how much more I will be impressed by contemplating the beauty of your Son. But, if we do not make that connection, we will soon be enjoying the perishable to the extreme, and seeking in God only food for our souls.” Unknowingly, we shall reserve the word pleasure for those things that do not produce true or eternal pleasure. And this will inevitably be disastrous; for let us remember that temporal pleasures are to increase our appreciation of heavenly pleasures. But there is another matter; eternal pleasures are available in some measure in this life, and we enjoy them when we are intimate with God. Our flesh does not enjoy them, but our soul learns to enjoy them.Satisfying our soul should produce pleasure, just as when we partake of a succulent banquet. Not only do we mitigate hunger, but we experience a sense of pleasure that must be greater than the feeling of fullness. If we did not experience pleasure, eating would be a tiresome task.The same occurs with our soul. Only Christ is true food for our soul, and God has provided means to be filled with Him. If, however, these means are not a pleasant experience for our soul, we will soon keep them by mere tiresome practices; as the evangelist Mark rightly records Jesus’ words, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful (Mark 4:19).God s goal is not that you fulfill your godly duties. He expects you to truly enjoy being with Him alone and with His people. Listen to these words Psalm 43:4a Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy.” And in our psalm, My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the Lord” (Psalm 84:2a). Psalm 84 is the passionate sigh of a soul that truly enjoys the presence of God in the midst of His people.Child of God, may your desire to be in God s house not determine whether you will be there or not, but the recognition that it is best for your soul. Once you are in that place, do not allow your soul not to enjoy it. When disaffection appears, do not ignore it. Ask God to give you back the joy of your salvation. Only when God is your greatest source of pleasure on this earth will you have the assurance that nothing will turn you away from Him. But something else, only the memory of times of true delight, will draw you back to God when you are far from God. When you go through a long period of spiritual dryness, the Holy Spirit will whisper, You need not remain so; there are greater delights for you.” This is what happened to the psalmist: These things I remember and I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go along with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God, with the voice of joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival (Psalm 42:4). Child of God, do not allow yourself not to enjoy the house of God. [Oh SEÑOR de los ejércitos, ¡cuán bienaventurado es el hombre que en ti confía!] -Salmos 84:10-11 [12]Vivimos en medio de una sociedad que ha sobrevalorado el disfrute de lo perecedero, y aun los verdaderos creyentes podemos olvidar fácilmente cuál es la fuente de nuestro mayor y único placer duradero.De hecho, Dios nos regala los placeres temporales legítimos a fin de incrementar nuestro aprecio por los placeres eternos. Y es que nuestra carne no puede apreciar en su justa dimensión el beneficio de los dones que recibe nuestra alma de parte de Dios. Imagina que estás a unos pocos metros de la impresionante vista de las Cataratas de Niágara o del Gran Cañón, y un escalofrío invade todo tu cuerpo. Lo que debería ocurrir es que pienses algo com esto: “Oh Señor, cuán glorioso es Tu nombre en toda la tierra. Si me has concedido estos placeres de este lado de la eternidad, cuánto más impresionado quedaré al contemplar la hermosura de tu Hijo”.Pero, si no hacemos esa conexión, pronto estaremos disfrutando en extremo de lo perecedero, y buscando en Dios solo “alimento para nuestras almas”. Sin darnos cuenta, reservaremos la palabra placer para aquellas cosas que no producen placer verdadero o eterno.Y esto, será inevitablemente desastroso; porque recordemos que los placeres temporales han de incrementar nuestro aprecio por los placeres celestiales. Pero hay otro asunto; los placeres eternos están disponibles en alguna medida en esta vida, y los disfrutamos cuando tenemos intimidad con Dios. Nuestra carne no los disfruta, pero nuestra alma aprende a disfrutarlos.Saciar nuestras almas debe producir placer, así como cuando participamos de un suculento banquete. No solo mitigamos el hambre, sino que experimentamos una sensación de placer que debe ser mayor que la sensación de llenura. Si no experimentáramos placer, comer sería una tarea fastidiosa.Lo mismo ocurre con nuestra alma. Sólo Cristo es verdadero alimento para nuestras almas, y Dios ha provisto medios para ser llenos de Él. Sin embargo, si estos medios no constituyen una experiencia placentera para nuestra alma, pronto las consederaremos meras prácticas fastidiosas; y, como bien señala el evangelista Marcos, “los deseos de las demás cosas entran y ahogan la palabra, y se vuelve estéril” (Marcos 4:19).La meta de Dios no es que cumplas tus deberes piadosos. Él espera que disfrutes verdaderamente estando con Él a solas y junto a Su pueblo. Escucha estas palabras Salmos 43:4a “Entonces llegaré al altar de Dios, a Dios, mi supremo gozo ”. Y en nuestro salmo, “Anhela mi alma, y aun desea con ansias los atrios del SEÑOR ” (Sal 84:2a). Y es que el salmo 84 es el suspiro apasionado de un alma que realmente disfruta de la presencia de Dios en medio de Su pueblo.Hijo de Dios, que tu deseo de estar en la casa de Dios no determine si has de estar allí o no, sino el reconocimiento de que es lo mejor para tu alma. Pero, una vez que estés en ese lugar, no le permitas a tu alma no disfrutarlo. Cuando se asome el desafecto, no lo ignores. Pide a Dios que te devuelva “el gozo” de tu salvación. Sólo cuando Dios es tu mayor fuente de placer en esta tierra, tendrás la garantía que nada te apartará de Él. Pero algo más, sólo el recuerdo de tiempos de verdadero deleite, te atraerá nuevamente a Dios cuando estés lejos de Dios. Cuando pases por un largo período de sequedad espiritual, el Espíritu Santo susurrará “no tienes que permanecer así; hay mayores deleites para ti”. Esto fue lo que ocurrió con el salmista: “Me acuerdo de estas cosas y derramo mi alma dentro de mí; de cómo iba yo con la multitud y la guiaba hasta la casa de Dios, con voz de alegría y de acción de gracias, con la muchedumbre en fiesta” (Salmos 42:4). Hijo de Dios, no permitas no disfrutar de la casa de Dios.
