The Daily CampusThe Daily Campus Thursday, October 22, 2020 This week, the World Series gets underway between the American League champion Tampa Bay Rays and the National League champion Los Angeles Dodgers. And just like that, the woes of Atlanta fans continued as the Braves officially blew their 3-1 NLCS lead, losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3. In the exit polls of Bolivia’s presidential election on Sunday, candidate Luis Arece of the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) party has won over fifty percent of the popular vote. Carlos Mesa of the liberal Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario party, Arece’s next closest competitor in the race, won only 30% of the vote and peacefully conceded defeat yesterday at noon. With an upcoming second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic to presumably hit this winter, documentary “Totally Under Control” was released on Hulu yesterday and gives a detailed look at what went on during the start of the pandemic through a scientific, political and economic lens. In fiscal year 2020, researchers at the University of Connecticut and UConn Health received $19 million more in grant funding than in the previous year to set a record for the greatest amount of funding the university has ever received in grants, according to a press release from UConn Today. With Election Day exactly two weeks away, it is high time for people to begin planning for it. It is pertinent that people register to vote and make plans regarding how they will vote now. Voting early through an absentee ballot is a very good option this year and it is important that students at the University of Connecticut take advantage of this opportunity. Faculty and staff at the University of Connecticut’s College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR) have made adjustments to typical classroom learning to accommodate the new normal of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Wednesday, the Undergraduate Student Government at the University of Connecticut held their bi-weekly senate meeting, discussing pass/fail legislation for the 2020-21 academic year, a new proposal for the spring 2021 academic calendar and honoring the two students who fixed the defaced Spirit Rock. The University of Connecticut’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion discovered the person behind the vandalization of the campus’ Spirit Rock is not part of the UConn community. When you first arrived at the University of Connecticut, I always said you were dealt a bad deck of cards. You walked into a series of events that were unprecedented. I told others I felt bad for you and that hopefully, this would all blow over soon. In the last two weeks, President Donald Trump has received both a Nobel Peace Prize nomination and a sudden opportunity to lock up a conservative majority on the Supreme Court. Such events would ordinarily have the incumbent flying high, but Trump cannot overlook Democratic challenger Joe Biden when they face off on the debate stage Tuesday night in Cleveland. A conversation between Mike Mavredakis and Luis Toscano, the new speaker of the senate for USG. The University of Connecticut Undergraduate Student Government’s Speaker of the Senate resigned Oct. 8. Jessica Delgado, former speaker of the senate and fifth-semester nursing major, said she decided to step down from her position to have more time to focus on personal matters. Yesterday was the second Monday in October. By Connecticut state law, yesterday was Columbus Day. For 10 states and dozens of cities (including West Hartford and Bridgeport), yesterday was instead recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Others have written and spoken at length about Christopher Columbus, and the countless atrocities he committed. The case for taking Columbus off the calendar has been made and made well. Today I want to make the case for why Indigenous Peoples’ Day should be on the calendar.
