Order Your Skyhawks Kit Store Closes July 20th

Hey Skyhawk Fans!

We are excited to announce that the FLC Cycling Team clothing order is now open.

Please take the time to follow the instructions below carefully and make sure you have paid for your items or they will not be produced/shipped.

THE CLOSING DATE IS FRIDAY JULY 20 AT 10PM MST. The order should arrive the weekend before the Fall term begins and we’ll let you know when it is in the Cycling Office.

Please read carefully below for purchasing instructions.

Here is the beta:

The FLC designs are available on any product you see in the store, from jerseys/jackets/vests to fleece bib knickers to arm warmers and gloves to casual gear, etc. Some of the more random accessories may have a minimum number ordered to be produced but any top or bottom will be made in time for the season. You can choose the $65.83 standard jersey – CS Tech Pro or Summer (just dont do the club cut and the sleeveless wont work for collegiate racing (usacycling rule)) to the $119.46 Apex line that is as high as tech gets. I like the summer version of the jerseys for racing as they are a bit lighter weight to help to stay cool.

It is also highly recommended to get at least one pair of bibs/shorts and get the Veloce or Women’s specific chamois (not GranFondo)! There is a USAC Collegiate Rule that shorts must either be team shorts or be blank on the side panel (BMX/DH excluded) and totally blank shorts are hard to come by, all new members should order a pair of team shorts there are often two or more races per weekend and sometimes washing is impossible.

I have tried on many of their items and sizing is fairly standard – since I (510, 150lbs) am a MTBer Ill get a Medium jersey – if I were primarily a roadie Id get a Small and since I have chicken legs Ill be getting Small bibs. Hey Ladies! – Most jerseys and shorts have Women specific cuts! If you want to get all techy on sizing you can check out the charts: https://www.champ-sys.com/pages/cycling-sizing-guide

Seeking their 23rd national title, Fort Lewis College Cycling heads to Reno, NV next week to contest the 2017 USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships of Cyclocross (CX). One Wednesday January 10th at 9:35am PST the FLC Men race in the Varsity race against the best teams in the country and the Women toe the line at 3:25pm PST. Then on Thursday at 3:30pm FLC will compete in the Team Relay with two Women and two Men doing battle with the other teams for 1 lap a piece. This race will surely be the determining factor in the Skyhawk’s main objective- the overall Team Omnium. Henry Nadell took the Rocky Mountain Coference CX title back in December and will get a front row call-up and freshman Skyler Mackey has been racing the biggest CX races around the country all year. Thomas Gauthier and Harrsion Buckley round out the Men and will surprise many with their strength and skill.

Ellen Campbell, junior, took the conference Women’s title and will look to capitalize on her front row call-up. Freshman Katja Freeburn has been training hard all Fall learning a new discipline. Kelsay Lundberg and Anna Schehrer bring Nationals experience to the table after strong finishes last year in Hartford and Kira Payer is looking to finish solid as well.

Women:

Ellen Campbell – So.

Katja Freeburn – Fr.

Kelsay Lundberg – Jr.

Men:

Skyhawks Name 2017 MTB Nats Team

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 18, 2017

Skyhawk Cycling Names Mountain Bike Nationals Team

Contact: Dave Hagen, 970-403-4842, hagen_d@fortlewis.edu

The Fort Lewis College Cycling Team has chosen the squad that will represent the Skyhawks at the upcoming 2017 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals in Missoula, Montana Oct. 19-22.  The team will be seeking to regain the Team Overall title after relinquishing it last year for the first time in 9 years to CU Boulder. Choosing a team to represent the Skyhawks are some of the toughest decisions that coaches (Chad Cheeney, Elke Brutsaert, Lucas LeMaire, Zach Graveson, Phil Cowan and Brittany Cowan) ever have to make simply because there are so many talented riders to choose from.

At the last Conference race at Powderhorn Bike Park in Grand Junction, Colorado Mesa Universitys (CMU) home meet the Skyhawks won the Division 1 Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference (RMCCC) team overall title. Edging out Colorado University and CMU by close margins. Endurance racer Henry Nadell sealed up the season overall Men’s A title with a close win in the Short Track over teammate and former conference leader Stephan Davoust. On the Gravity side, the Skyhawks have one of the deepest Womens team in history, with McCauley Smith, Local Lacey Andersen and Freshman Elle Runyan, all season conference race winners and podium finishers and most events. Having such good competition in the RMCCC is great preparation for the National competitions against not only top teams for the RMCCC but teams from perennial national powerhouses Marian University, Lees McRae College and Brevard College.

At Nationals FLC will compete in Gravity events –  Downhill (DH) and Dual Slalom (DS) and Endurance events, Cross Country (XC) and Short Track XC (ST). Team Relay (TR) is a fun team event that places teams of 4 riders from each school with a female rider having to do at least 2 laps and does count in the team omnium standings. Each Collegiate team is allowed to bring 10 riders of each gender to compete in these events. Some riders are very adept at both Gravity and Endurance and will be competing in both disciplines in search of an Individual Omnium (IO) title. Both Anna Scheher and Stephan Davoust will be competing in the IO for FLC. Three freshman made the team this year, Locals and former Durango Devo athletes, Katja Freeburn and Camryn Sippy, and Washington Native Elle Runyan for the Women, along with Jason Rowton from California for the Men. The Skyhawk’s lone defending individual champion is Stephan Davoust in the Men Individual Omnium. Currently the Skyhawks are the #2 ranked Collegiate program in the nation.

There are a few ways to keep up with the team before and during the competitions. You can keep up with the Skyhawks on Facebook by liking http://www.facebook.com/FLCCyclingTeam or following on Twitter and Instagram @FLCCYCLING. Local Talent Highlights FLC Cycling 2017 Recruiting Class

FLC Cycling is proud to announce a great recruiting class of new members that as of right now consists of 40 riders, 11 of which are female. We also get to keep 7 locals in town that have developed wonderfully through Durango Devo and will make an immediate impact. They join riders from all over the country who will be riding for the Skyhawks in 2017.

Camryn Sippy

Top Durango riders Camryn Sippy (CRC Janitorial-Scott) and Katja Freeburn (Bear Development) have received the FLC Cycling Foundation Scholarship, Keiran Eagan (CRC Janitorial-Scott) has received the inaugural Durango Hometown Heroes Cycling Scholarship and Sophomore Ellen Campbell (Competitive Cyclist MTB Team) has been awarded the inaugural Gearjammer Cycling Scholarship.

Noah Schossler

Top male riders from other parts of the country are Track and Road racer Noah Schossler from California who brings great experience with him from racing with the Lux Development team. Mountain Bike and Road racer Noah Lindenthal also hails from California and was a force in the NorCal NICA High School League. Nick Gallizioli from California is a recipient of the Bob Warnicke scholarship for BMX racers and is excited to ride all sorts of bikes. Transfer student Skyler Mackey from Oklahoma who races

Skylar Mackey

for KCCX and the venerable Bill Marshall, has a very strong Cyclocross background and has been producing some great results on the road this summer. Jason Rowton from Southern California (younger brother of graduate Lucas) rides for the Whole Athlete Development team on the MTB and Road.

Kira Payer

It is tough to beat locals Camryn and Katja but Kira Payer (KMS Cycling Killington Mountain School) from Massachusetts has produced some solid results as a Cat 2 road racer. Luma Randolph, daughter of former Durangoan and Pro Road/MTB rider Greg Randolph, was consistently on the podium in the Idaho NICA High School League. The Skyhawks are also excited to welcome back Emily Abraham from California who is a promising track and road racer and had taken a year off school.

All of these riders compliment an already strong team that finished 2nd in the Varsity Team Overall in 2016-17 combining the disciplines of Track, Mountain Bike, Cyclocross, BMX and Road. The future looks bright for the ‘Hawks as only 10 Male and 0 Female Varsity riders graduated in 2017. Also coming to FLC from Durango are TJ Rifkin, Austin Munroe and Will Berger, we are excited that they will be on the team.

Fort Lewis College Cycling is committed to developing cycling athlete scholars in a spirit of enjoyment, teamwork, citizenship, and complete access to training and expert coaching. We stress camaraderie and self-improvement in an encouraging and ethical environment. We welcome all skill levels and cycling ambitions, working together to improve ourselves while pursuing quality educations. FLC Cycling is a Division 1 Varsity cycling program based in the cycling hotbed of Durango, CO that operates as a club open to any full-time student in good standing.

The Fort Lewis Cycling Team was born in 1994. That year, in its first intercollegiate competition as a club sport, the new team won the inaugural National Collegiate Cycling Association mountain biking national championships. The teams first uniforms were t-shirts donated by the downtown Durango Diner, where club members would gather before their morning training rides. Since then, the cycling world has come to know FLC Cycling – and the teams jerseys. Because since that first season, the FLC Cycling has continued its roll, winning national championships 21 more times in mountain biking, cyclocross, and road racing while also excelling in Track and BMX racing.

FLC BMX Heads to Nationals With Confidence

Fort Lewis College Cycling has chosen the team that will represent the Skyhawks at the upcoming 2017 USA Cycling Collegiate BMX Nationals this weekend, March 10-12, at Cajun Nationals in Monroe, LA.  The team will be looking to improve on its 3rd place overall at last year’s competition in Louisville, KY. BMX Coach Jordan Rupe has been working with a core group of BMX student athletes since September.

The team is led by Senior Rebeccah Sheppard and Sophomore Hayden Raymond while Senior Taylor Whitworth and Sophomore Jacob Reese will make an impact. With snow on the Durango BMX track since December the team has been doing their training in the weight room, parking lots and even some miles on the rollers in the office, but have also been able to get four weekends of racing with solid results in Greeley, Phoenix and Albuquerque to prepare for Nationals – everyone is on very good form. With such good preparation the Skyhawks are ready to compete against USA Cycling Collegiate Division 1 Varsity perennial BMX powerhouses Marian University and Lindsay Wilson College.

There will be a 2-day format to determine Collegiate BMX individual and team champions. A complete round of qualifiers and finals will be run each day with the individual winners being determined by a combination of both day’s points. Team points are then determined by combining the points of the top three riders from each team, ranked based off that total and given a second set of points to give a score for the team then adding the score from each day’s race for the team overall.

There are a few ways to keep up with the team before and during the competitions. The team’s Facebook page will have daily photos, results and reports http://www.facebook.com/FLCCyclingTeam or follow on Twitter @FLCCYCLING. The complete schedule, official results and reports can be found on http://usacycling.org.

Official FLC Team Clothing Store Now Open

Happy Summer! Hope all is going well.

The clothing order is now open.

Please take the time to follow the instructions below carefully and make sure you have paid for your items or they will not be produced/shipped.

It is also a good time to order additional items for cooler/cold/wet weather.

Remember – the jersey design will change for 2017-18 so if a new member maybe just get a jersey because all will be required to purchase new when design changes. It only happens every four years.

THE CLOSING DATE IS THURSDAY JULY 21  AT 10PM MST. The order should arrive the weekend before the Fall term begins and will be in the Cycling Office

You can choose the $63.25 the standard jersey – CS Tech  (just dont do the club cut and the sleeveless wont work for collegiate racing (usacycling rule)) to the $169 Razor Carbon version that is as high as tech gets. I have  the $71.19 AirLite  Short Sleeve jersey and it is great for riding when it is warmer or when racing.

It is also highly recommended to get at least one pair of bibs/shorts and you even have a choice of Chamois, get the Veloce or Women’s specific! Unless you have a load of shorts/bibs without sponsors on them  (collegiate rule) then you should get a pair there are often two or more races per weekend and sometimes washing is impossible.

I have tried on many of their items and sizing is fairly standard – since I (510, 150lbs) am a MTBer Ill get a Medium jersey – if I were primarily a roadie Id get a Small and since I have chicken legs Ill be getting Small bibs. Hey Ladies! The new Donna line of jerseys and shorts are women specific! If you want to get all techy on sizing you can check out the charts: http://champ-sys.com/master-size-charts/

For all of you new members – if you come from warmer climates you should definitely get some cool/cold weather garments i.e. Jackets (insulated and water repellant, thermal/fleece warmers, knickers or tights, shoe covers, gloves.

For all of you TRACKies, CXers, TTers, and CRITers – you should definitely get your own skin suit!

Returning members can use the email and password you used to order in the past.

Here is the link to the store:

https://custom2.champ-sys.com/teamstore/?FLCSummer2016

You will see a page full of templates.

Click on the first Cycling Jerseys template, it has most of what anyone will want. Select the product from the drop down menu, then zipper type (full zips are the best), then if you want reflective piping ($5) or zip rear pocket ($5), then the amount of each size – choose race cut or women, club cuts are super baggy. Click Add to Cart and you can choose to continue shopping or proceed to check out.

The 2nd template are trail jerseys that can be used for DH/BMX (BMX must have long sleeve).

The 3rd and 4th templates are for high end women specific jerseys if interested.

The next 3 templates are vests, jackets, mock turtlenecks – remember if coming from warmer climates you will need an insulated, maybe rain proof jacket for cold morning starts and winter training.

The 1st shorts and bibs template has all the options. CS Bib Short is standard and get veloce or women’s chamois. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th shorts and bib templates are repetitive.

Tights and knickers – self explanatory.

Many skin/speedsuit selections – get you own if Trackie, CXer or super committed Roadie/TTer. There is even a CX skin suit that has some insulation in the front!

Running tops can work fine as Trail jerseys/casual wear.

Top and Bottoms are BMX/DH. BMX/DH bottoms are not required but look super pro.

There are also some casual jackets/hoodies if interested.

Once you have chosen all your items proceed to check out. You’ll review your order and if correct hit the checkout button again.

Announcing the 2016 Road Nationals Team

The FLC Cycling Team has just finished the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference (RMCCC) road racing season at Colorado Mesa University and has put together the team that’ll represent Fort Lewis College at USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals May 13-15 in Asheville, NC, the second year in a row the championships have been held there.

The Cycling Skyhawks finished second as a team to the University of Colorado Boulder in the final RMCCC Division 1 standings after 4 weekends of racing. “Our conference season was a strange one with three cancelled weekends of racing on the front range because of weather. We adapted by doing some inter-squad racing, made it to a demanding USA Cycling race in Utah and practiced our Team Time Trial quite a bit. We worked well together as a team during the season and are quite confident that we’ll see some stellar performances in Asheville.” said FLC Cycling Road Coach, Ian Burnett.

The FLC Cycling staff has spent most of the last 48 hours mulling over this season results, past results and the character of the large pool possible student athletes to represent. The following student athletes will compete in the Individual Time Trial (ITT), Team Time Trial (TTT), Criterium(CR) and Road Race (RR) in and around Asheville. The ITT does not count toward the elusive overall team omnium, but may in the future. The team will be looking for some redemption from last year after being stifled by the heat and some bad luck. “Picking a Nationals Team out of so many deserving riders is one of the toughest parts of the job but I think we did a great job of picking riders best suited to the courses and conditions while also working well as a team. We have many riders returning from last year’s squad and boy, we are going to miss our seniors next year, but have some very strong underclassmen, too”, said Coach Burnett, “things have been coming together for the team this Spring and if the breaks go our way we have a good shot at the team title.”

The start finish will be at 4th Ave/9th St on a course with 6 turns and highlighted by the 6th Ave hill. Five collegiate and four citizen categories will speed around the course for varying amounts of time based on experience and ability. The action will be fast and fun! Racing concludes at 6pm.

Racing concludes on Sunday April 24 with the grueling “Carver Brewing Co. Road Race,” starting at 8:00am on Rim Drive in front of the Education Business Hall. After a late arrival yesterday, the team spent today previewing the courses here in Asheville. Collegiate racing doesnt begin until Friday but the riders are staying busy with preparations.

The man, the legend!
Skyhawks Ready to Roll in Asheville

Seeking their 23rd national title, Fort Lewis College Cycling heads to Asheville, NC January 5th-11th to contest the 2016 USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships of Cyclocross (CX). The Skyhawks will start competition Friday the 8th at 10am with the Division 1 Men’s race, then at 1:20pm the Division 1 Women race. The main objective- the Team Omnium title where each collegiate race is scored then totaled to determine the overall team points leader. With that said, FLC has a few riders that can compete for the win and that goes a long way for Team Omnium points. Then on Saturday at 10:45am, the very important Collegiate 44 Team Relay that counts towards the Team Omnium takes place. The relay pits 1 rider from each 3-4 person team doing one lap of the ~2 mile course all out with females completing at least 2 laps to determine the fastest team. The Skyhawks finished 2nd in last years Relay.

Fort Lewis has won two CX national championships in the past, 19 x D1 Mountain Bike, 1 x D2 Road title and had many individual National Champions in all disciplines.

Sofia Gomez Villafane returns as the Skyhawks top female CX racer. She had a disappointing 2015 Collegiate D1 race in Austin, TX and is looking to return to the podium, if not the top step. On the Men’s side the ‘Hawks are deep, with 6 returning members of last year’s CX Nats squad. Seniors Cody Cupp, Kolben Preble and Payson McElveen have been riding very well of late and Sophomore Ian McPherson has a podium spot well within his sights.
