What to do when you have a stopover in Amsterdam?
Below you find several suggestions what to do when you have a Schiphol Airport Layover.
How much time do you have ? There is no fixed plan. Just let me know how much time you have and we’ll make a plan together.
Is it your first time to Amsterdam? Or second? May be even third? Seen the Amsterdam outskirts already away from the crowds?
Do you like tourist traps? Or do you prefer off the beaten tracks? Any special wishes ? Your wish is my command!
I am a born and raised Amsterdam well mannered private guide. Please have a look at my reviews here.

Volendam Fishing Village
Go see Volendam when you have an Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Layover.
This lovely fisherman hamlet Volendam is on a stone throw distance from Amsterdam.
Here you can eat the best fish you’ve ever been eating. Definetely!
Make a walk on the famous “dike” (a kind of boardwalk).
Have the chance to make a funny family or friends portrait in typical Dutch costume.
Cheese museum/farm and clogs factory demonstration is possible.
I’m your guide, so keep calm !
Anne Frank House
Never to forget!
Did you read the book when you were young?
One of Amsterdams best visited places definetely!
If you want to visit the house inside, you need to order your tickets in advance, a couple of weeks before.
We can walk by for pictures and see the statue around the corner.
Collect moments, not things!
Amsterdam Windmills Off the beaten tracks
See the windmills on the outskirts of Amsterdam (in Weesp). Away from the crowds
Free windmill entrance on Saturday’s from 10.00-14.00
Make a combination with Amsterdam Castle, which is on a stonethrow from here.
We can go off the beaten paths, drink fresh unpasteurized milk straight from the cow,
see a non touristy cheesecup winning cheesefarm, meet the cows, dairy farms, authentic riverbridges,
stunning landscape views, etc
“You have to see Amsterdam before you die”
Redlight District
Amsterdam (sin city:-) is famous all over the world.
The redlight district where prostitution is legal, is a must see. You’re safe with me, no worries.
See the sexworkers, visit the famous coffeeshop The Bulldog, see the Hash-Marijuana-Hemp Museum,
visit a cannabis growroom, walk through chinatown, drink a beer in the pub “The Old Sailor”, the Museum of Prostitution (Redlight Secrets),
Amsterdams oldest Church, smartshops and much much more. Feel the vibe….
Flowers are a girl’s best friend
Keukenhof & Flowerfields
If you have an Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Layover between mid March and mid May,
for sure the flowers will make you happy. You can visit world’s biggest spring garden.
Or we can just go off the beaten paths and go into the flowerfields.
I can make a very nice photoshoot from you or even a drone video.
If you are not married yet, you can even ask your wife (just a tip for the men:-) to marry you!
For sure she’ll say yes. I’m your witness!
Never a dull moment !
Amsterdam Canals
With more than 1500 bridges (252 downtown) and 165 canals Amsterdam is a fairytale.
See the fairy tale architecture, learn about the VOC (East India Company), make your perfect
social media picture, watch out for the bikes (they come from everywhere haha) and see the beautiful Westerchurch.
I teach you all about my hometown (the past, current and the future).
Of course everything can be customized. Your wish is my command:-)
Traveling leaves you speechless, but then turns you into a storyteller
Zaanse Schans Windmills
The Zaanse Schans is a kind of a tourist “trap” but a real nice to see!
On a few miles north of Amsterdam we can see some different windmills in production
(entrance 5 euro per person per windmill).
It’s possible to make a windmill cruise from about 25 minutes for 10 euro each
and see the windmills from the water. Cheese farm visit and clogs factory visit are possible.
Local guides do it better!
Gouda Cheese
After the big succes in Amsterdam with The Heineken Experience , it’s now time for The Gouda Cheese Experience!
This is a new tour since January 2020. Cheese, cheese , and nothing but cheese.
The Dutch cows they produce 30 liters of milk every day. And we need 10 liters of milk for one kilo of cheese.
Gouda is a beautiful small city close to Rotterdam, really worth to go there.
Let’s go Dutch! Off the beaten paths to see the stunning Dutch countryside is a must do if we have enough time!
“Free your mind and the rest will follow”
Coffeeshops
With more than 165 coffeeshops left (we had more than 500 in the nineties!!), Amsterdam is a paradise for
cannabis smokers. A coffeeshop is place where you can relax and smoke a joint. It’s not legalized, but tolerated.
Let me teach you all about Amsterdams coffeeshop culture and history!
We can visit coffeeshops in the centre, but we can also go to the best coffeeshop of Amsterdam away from the crowds.
There you can have word with a real Amsterdam local who is the coffeeshop owner and talk to the locals.
The coffee is for free:-)
Amsterdam: Veni, Vidi, Vici
Ajax Amsterdam Johan Cruijff Arena
Do you love soccer? Johan Cruijff was born and raised in Amsterdam and was one of world’s biggest soccer legends ever!
Let me show you where he was born, where he grew up, where he lived, he went to school, where he signed his first contract,
the roots and remains of the old Ajax soccer stadium. Ajax Amsterdam is famous all over the world!
We can do the stadium tour where you can touch the holy grass, make a dressing room selfie, visit the museum etc
I left my heart in Amsterdam
Peninsula Marken
This awesome Dutch architecture is a must see!
Discover the quaint fishing village of Marken, located only 17 kilometres from Amsterdam.
Quiet streets, lined with green, wood-paneled houses.
Marken is one of those idyllic villages that you see pictures of and can’t believe are real.
Home to less than 2,000 people, Amsterdam to Marken is the perfect place to be away from the crowds.
You never really travel alone. The world is full of friends waiting to get to know you
Amsterdam Castle
Located in the hamlet Muiden, that combines the best of the past, present and future.
One of its main attractions is the medieval Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot.
The Amsterdam castle has a drawbridge, five towers, battlements and other features worthy of King Arthur.
Muiden is a charming small town to stroll around, with a lively quayside lined with cafes,
with a good view of the boats coming in and out of the harbour.
For those who like to see more in less time
Make a canal cruise
A must do when you visit Amsterdam. Fingers crossed for good weather, and you’ll have
the time of your life. I can arrange your tickets upfront, so no waste of time standing the line.
If the weather predictions are good, I buy you the open boat tickets.
With you always funny born and raised Amsterdam captain, you’ll never ever forget this amazing experience.
The boat tour takes about one hour.
Have a safe flight !
