In 1959, 1960 and 1961, someone who was green on the outside and red on the inside was known in Cuba as a “political melon.” I don’t believe that Giorgia Meloni, who has just won the elections in Italy, is a fascist deep inside, nor even green on the outside, although many of her positions match the positions of the extreme right.
She experiences what happened to Hungary’s Prime Minister Víktor Orban, when he was the white hope of liberalism. At that time, he was the leader of Fidesz, a quasi-student organization which he came to preside thanks to his anti-communist speeches. He was the natural heir to Count Otto Graf Lambsdorff at the head of the Liberal International. Lambsdorff, former German Minister of Economy, was the one who recommended him to me. I remember that he asked me, when I returned from my trip to Hungary, what I thought of Orban as his replacement at the head of the Liberal International.

En los años 1959, 60 y 61 se referían en Cuba a los “melones políticos” como alguien que era verde por fuera y rojo por dentro. No creo que la señora Meloni, que acaba de ganar las elecciones en Italia, sea fascista por dentro, ni siquiera creo que el fascismo sea posible en la Italia de estos tiempos, aunque muchas de las posturas de ella coinciden con esas posiciones de la ultraderecha. Es probable, en cambio, que se utilicen epítetos como “fascista” y “estalinista” para callar posiciones adversarias. Son simples piedras arrojadizas.
Le ocurre lo que a Víktor Orbán, el jefe de gobierno de Hungría, cuando era la esperanza blanca del liberalismo. En ese momento era el líder de Fidez, una organización cuasi estudiantil en la que se había impuesto por sus discursos anticomunistas. Era el heredero natural del conde Otto Graf Lambsdorff al frente de la Internacional Liberal. Lambsdorff, exministro de Economía de Alemania, fue quien me lo recomendó. Recuerdo que me preguntó, al regreso de mi viaje a Hungría, qué me parecía como su sustituto al frente de la IL.

Her son will reign with the name of Charles III, but it will not be the same. Elizabeth II takes with her the affection and respect of most of her subjects. Charles III will have to win them over and that is very difficult. She was buried at Windsor Castle, near her parents, George VI and Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, her flighty sister Margaret, and her husband, Philip of Edinburgh, decorated as a hero during World War II, who had the fine courtesy of dying in 2021, at 99 years old, eighteen months before his regal wife.

Tras una digna y ordenada monarquía de más de 70 años, la reina inglesa optó por morir a los 96. No quería arriesgarse a otra entrevista como la de Oprah. Su hijo reinará con el nombre de Carlos III, pero no será igual. Isabel II se lleva el cariño y el respeto de la mayor parte de sus súbditos. Carlos III deberá ganárselos y eso es muy difícil. Finalmente, fue enterrada en el castillo de Windsor, cerca de sus padres, Jorge VI e Isabel, la Reina Madre, de su casquivana hermana Margarita, y su marido, Felipe de Edimburgo, condecorado como héroe durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, quien tuvo la fina cortesía de morir en el 2021, a los 99 años, dieciocho meses antes de su regia esposa.
La madre de Jorge Luis Borges también murió a los 99 años. Un conocido suyo le dijo que era una lástima que no hubiera vivido los cien. “No creo”, le respondió el escritor porteño. “¿Por qué?”, continuó indagando su interlocutor sorprendido . “Porque jamás le vi esa devoción al sistema métrico decimal”, le respondió Borges, quien no perdía una oportunidad de hacer una frase ingeniosa.

Ricardo Lagos has taken Gabriel Boric as his disciple, although he doesn’t know it. The former social democratic president is practically half a century older than the brand-new socialist president. Lagos is 84 years old. He has seen it all. Boric is the youngest president in Latin America; he is only 35 years old. Protecting the boy is a sound decision. The interview with Lagos appeared in Madrid’s El País. No one in his right mind wants things to go wrong for Boric. Chile continues to be the benchmark for Latin Americans, the nation that was about to enter the first world. It is true that he had a stumble in October 2019, but I think that everything has passed.

Ricardo Lagos ha tomado como discípulo a Gabriel Boric, aunque él no lo sepa. El expresidente socialdemócrata le lleva, prácticamente, medio siglo al flamante presidente socialista. Lagos tiene 84 años. Está de regreso de todo. Boric, es el presidente más joven de América Latina, sólo tiene 35 primaveras. La misma edad que tenía el peruano Alan García durante su primer mandato, minuciosamente fallido. Ha hecho muy bien en proteger al muchacho. La entrevista a Lagos apareció en El País de Madrid. Nadie, en su sano juicio, quiere que las cosas le salgan mal. Chile sigue siendo el referente de los latinoamericanos: la nación que estuvo a punto de entrar en el primer mundo. Es verdad que tuvo un tropiezo en octubre de 2019, pero creo que todo ha pasado.

Mikhail Gorbachev has died at 91 years old. Not that bad. The life expectancy of Russians in 2019, just before the pandemic, was eight years less than the average of people in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). If you decide to be from Korea, a member country of the institution, I advise you to be born in the furiously capitalist south, and not in the gloriously socialist north. On average, you will live 12 more years (80.5 vs. 68.8) and will be three centimeters taller (168.6 vs. 165.6). But I want to write about Gorbachev, “Gorby” for his friends, which he didn’t have too many in Russia.
I visited Moscow three or four times during Gorbachev’s last period in the government and Boris Yeltsin’s first tenure. At that time, I was traveling as vice president of the Liberal International —in the sense of that term in Europe—, and as president of the Cuban Liberal Union. I didn’t meet Gorbachev, although I had friends who did establish a certain friendship with him. Instead, I met Aleksander Yakovlev, his anti-totalitarian conscience and the person who most influenced him. So I can assure that the changes that took place in that tortured region of the planet were due to Yakovlev’s advice.

Mijail Gorbachov murió a los 91 años. No está mal. La esperanza de vida de los rusos, para el 2019, justo antes de la pandemia, era ocho años menos que el promedio de la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económicos (OCDE). Si usted decide ser coreano, país miembro de la institución, le aconsejo que nazca en el sur, rabiosamente capitalista, y no en el norte, gloriosamente socialista. Como promedio vivirá 12 años más (80.5 frente a 68.8) y tendrá más de tres centímetros de estatura (168.6 frente a 165.6). Pero quiero escribir sobre Gorbachov, “Gorby” para sus amigos, que no tenía demasiados en Rusia.
Visité Moscú tres o cuatro veces durante el último periodo de Gorbachov y la primera etapa de Boris Yeltsin. En esa época viajaba como vicepresidente de la Internacional Liberal -en el sentido que le daban al término en Europa-, y como presidente de la Unión Liberal Cubana. No conocí a Gorbachov, aunque tuve amigos que sí trabaron cierta amistad con él. En cambio, sí conocí a Aleksander Yakovlev, la conciencia antitotalitaria del hombre que acaba de morir que y la persona que más influyó en él. De manera que puedo asegurar que los cambios sucedidos en aquella torturada región del planeta fueron debidos al consejo de Yakovlev.

“It’s in the genes.” Javier Figueroa de Cárdenas is a relative of Miguel Figueroa, a brilliant 19th century autonomist. Autonomism was a way of being patriotic in Cuba, especially since the “Pact of Zanjón,” which in 1878 put an end to the “Ten Years War,” until 1898, when the United States tipped the balance in favor of the Cuban insurrection.
Independentism
Autonomism was defeated by the independentism promoted by José Martí, but, as the most reliable historians recognize today, the best Cuban minds were autonomists: Rafael Montoro, Antonio Govín, José María Gálvez, Eduardo Dolz, Figueroa himself and a very long etcetera. Unfortunately, the experiment only lasted 20 years (from 1878 to 1898,) the same period that the “Liberal Autonomist Party” lasted, the first political entity that emerged in a totally independent Cuba.
