Eva unites us all. (Much better than the Olympics.)

Motomu Kiyokawa has Passed Away

We regret to inform all of you that on August 17th; Motomu Kiyokawa, who played Fuyutsuki in both the Eva TV series as well as the New Theatrical Edition films, had died of pneumonia at age 87. Kiyokawa is the second known member of the Eva cast, and the first member of the show’s primary voice cast to pass away. He was preceded in death by Eji Maruyama, who played the elderly homeroom teacher for Class 2A.

Kiyokawa has also played other roles such as Tem Ray, the father of the protagonist from Mobile Suit Gundam, Gargoyle from Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Mayor Domino from the Final Fantasy VII: Remake game, among numerous others in a decades long career.

This should be a reminder to all of us that time is fleeting and that those in entertainment who we admire, could be gone from us before we know it.

GKIDS to release Shin Eva in North America

In a surprising move, GKIDS has announced that they will be distributing the theatrical, physical and digital release for Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time in North America. The company plans on a late 2022 timeframe to release the film in theaters. While there are no details on the release date for either physical or digital editions as of this writing, it can be speculated that it will coincide with the Japanese release. With several major anime conventions being held this summer such as Anime Expo in a couple of weeks, we all hope for more news in the immediate future.

Shin Eva is still available to watch of Amazon Prime.

Groundwork of Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Release Pushed Back

In a previous tweet in March, it was announced that the Groundwork of Evangelion 3.0+1.0 #1 book was to be released at the end of May, but a new announcement states that it was delayed and is expected to be at the end of June instead.

It looks like most of the details haven’t changed since the March announcement. It’s still priced at 3,700¥ not including tax and it’s full color A4 sized. It will include original works from the staff that will be exclusive to this book. The cover is illustrated by the chief directory of animation, Atsushi Nishigori.Atsushi Nishigori.

Additionally, people who order from the Yahoo or Ikebukuro Evastore will get a bonus postcard of the Groundworks cover.

NGE Now Available for Download to Own

On November 2nd, GKIDS made available Episodes 1-26 of NGE and the films Death(true)2 and the End of Evangelion for download to own, and can be purchased on Amazon Prime & Apple TV. On Prime, the TV series (either in Japanese with English subtitles or the official English dub) can be purchased for $1.99 in standard definition ($2.99 in high definition) per episode or $51.74 in SD ($77.74 in HD) for the entire series. Death has both subbed and dubbed versions for $19.99 & $8.99 respectively while only the subtitled version for EoE is available for $19.99.

Now the most interesting detail in this announcement is that for Apple TV, it’s not exactly the same. There, the TV series is subbed only while both Death and EoE are only available dubbed. At the time of this writing, no price is advertised. Please keep these differences in mind if you prefer either Japanese or English for your viewing pleasure.

General Commentary Thread Now Up

The Fan-Geeks Commentary is pleased to announce that the General Commentary thread is now up. Regular users of the wiki subforum probably have noticed its introduction. Feel free to add your comments to any episode from Episode 09 to Episode 26 (End of TV series). The only exception is Episode 19, which has a translated script and so gets its own commentary thread.

This is the last commentary thread of the Fan-Geeks Commentary. Although it won’t close anytime soon, it’s going to be curtains for the commentary when it does close.

Feel free to add your comments to the thread, and it’ll be added on to the commentary. Don’t miss your chance to say something meaningful. Be the one to point out those little details about Evangelion that everyone else misses. The chance is all yours while it lasts.

New Details on Other Editions of NGE on Bluray (For the Budget Minded)

We have now received more details regarding further editions of NGE on Bluray. The Collector’s Edition, which retails for US$174.98 (£124.99) will have all the on disc bonuses as the Ultimate Edition while not having as many of the physical features. There will also be a Standard Edition, retailing for $45.99 (£59.99). Of course, it will have fewer features than either the Ultimate or Collector’s Editions, the most notable being that will not include the dub and subtitle tracks that was originally issued in ADV’s physical version. There is also the option to download the series, though it doesn’t come with any bonus features nor do we have the pricing on it at this time, but we will update as soon as we do. Please see GKIDS or AllTheAnime’s websites for a more comprehensive list of what is or is not on each edition.

The Collector’s Edition will be released on December 8th, the same as the Ultimate Edition, while the Standard Edition will be released on November 9th. The Download to Own option will be available November 2nd.

NGE Ultimate Edition Bluray Available for Preorder

Both GKIDS and AllTheAnime have announced that preorders for the Ultimate Edition Bluray set are now open for the US and UK respectively. The set will include the following:

All 26 episodes of the TV series (Directors cut for episodes 21-26 only). Both the dub and subtitle tracks are the ones used on the version streaming on Netflix as well as a second set of discs that will have the sub and dub from the ADV release (Whether these tracks are from the original release or from the Platinum Edition is unknown at this time).Death(true)2 feature film. The End of Evangelion feature film.156 page art book.

Please see GKIDS and AllTheAnime’s respective sites for a more exhaustive features list, but suffice to say, it is comparable to the bluray edition released in Japan in 2015. It should be noted, however, that both sets will not have the ending theme “Fly Me to the Moon.” While it is disappointing, Evageeks member Gendo’s Papa has made known to us a twitter thread that explains the circumstances of why it isn’t there.

The price is US$275 (£199) and is limited to 5000 copies for the US (and of this posting sold out) and 2500 for the UK. These editions can also be ordered only through the two companies directly. For those who think the price is too steep for their budgets, both companies will release details on other editions August 30th.

New NGE Bluray News!

Longtime Evageeks user GendosPapa has made it known to us today that GKIDS has announced, through both Twitter and e-mail, that they have revamped their Evangelion page, which includes a clock counting down.

At the end of this countdown (one week from today), the NGE Bluray set, and the Ultimate Edition of the set in particular, will be available for preorder. Specific details such as the release date, price, and availability of copies are not mentioned, but we remain hopeful that these questions will be answered next week.

For further information, please visit the GKIDS Eva page.

We must also add that AlltheAnime has made a similar announcement for our fellow fans in the UK and Europe in general. Special thanks to Silvermoonlight.
