Consortium for Small-scale Modeling
consortium formed in 1998
The Consortium for Small-scale Modeling (COSMO) was formed in October1998. Its general goal is to develop, improve and maintain a non-hydrostatic limited-areaatmospheric model, that has been used both for operational and for research applications by themembers of the consortium (details). Moreover, withina licence , the COSMO model has been used for operational and research applications by other national (hydro-)meteorological services, universities and research institutes. The cosmo licence is not available anymore (as the model reached its end and is replaced by ICON), but ICON licencing is possible.
The COSMO science plan called for a harmonization of development of the COSMO and ICON (ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic) models in the time horizon of 2020-21. Further development of the COSMO model was reduced since 2019 and the final version (v3.0) was released in 15 Dec. 2021. Development and testing of new features are now restricted to ICON.
It is therefore recommended to migrate to ICON, as the future operational model.

Additionally, these regional and military services within the member states are also participating:
The COSMO-Model is also used by other academic communities, who adapted it to their needs:
