THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS

UNDE members donated more than $23 000 to the PSAC Social Justice Fund to assist flooded communities in BC, following the unprecedented climate emergency that has upended thousands of people.

It is important to recognize that:

This emergency does not end with receding waters. Much of the farmland that has been flooded in BC is highly contaminated and unfit for human or animal use. The SJF includes support for clean-up and transition.

Impacted communities will have to build back better and differently if they expect to build a sustainable future for themselves and their children.

Indigenous communities have been severely impacted by an endless series of climate catastrophes in the last year and need ongoing support.

This is why the SJF is targeting its funds to a more long-term rebuilding process that includes the involvement of all community members working together to find a new way forward.

Support for the rebuilding and transition requires emotional and psychological support. Transition may mean leaving current homes and rebuilding on neighbouring land or on higher ground, or transition to a new livelihood. This needs a deep and long-term commitment from government, cities, and from all of the local development agencies working with the impacted families for the long run.

The goal of growing and pooling PSAC resources is to have a greater and more united impact on the affected communities today and the months to come. This includes strengthening programs or organizations where our members are already engaged in mobilizing relief and volunteering their labour.

The SJF is providing support to the United for BC Flood Response Fund, the Canadian Red Cross, First Nations organizations, farmers and migrant farm workers, food security programs, women’s shelters, transition homes and local initiatives.
