A 2020 scientific review by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) estimates 2.4 million cases of foodborne illness occurs every year in the UK. This is up from the 2009 estimate of approximately one million. Never underestimate how useful it is to know the 'scores on the doors' We worked with the Food Standards Agency to standardise the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme in 2011, which helps the public decide where to eat out, or buy food. The ratings provide clear data about hygiene standards achieved at the last inspection. Businesses are awarded a score of 0-5. Food Standards Scotland operates a Pass or Improvement required scheme with an additional Eat Safe award for those which exceed legal standards. Inspections are carried out regularly by a Environmental Health Officer from the business's local council. Physical condition of the premises Ventilation, cleanliness, pest control and facilities All processes carried out before food is processed or sold to customers If and how hygiene standards are being upheld And they even look at the types of customers frequenting the business, e.g. vulnerable groups. In Northern Ireland and Wales food businesses must display their current sticker in a prominent position. Legislation to require this in England is in the process of becoming law. Food Standards Agency definitions are : Helping the leading organisations below to achieve the highest food hygiene standards: To promote better consumer choice, food businesses with consistent achievement of highest level are now being recognized with our new Elite award. The award is for Food Businesses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland who have achieved three consecutive 5 ratings in the following categories: Bed and Breakfast Caf Canteen Guest House Hotel Nightclub Sandwich Shop Restaurant Takeaway Currently, the rating only reflects the standards found by the inspector on the day the last of the last inspection. So whilst it may have been up to the standard of 5 at some point in the last 2 years, the consumer has no way of being assured this is the case on the day of any particular visit. It is much more likely to be the case if the business has achieved this standard over a number of consecutive inspections. In Denmark the Elite award is presented to businesses who have achieved the top (Super Smiley) designation on the last four consecutive occasions. 83% of all business achieve Super Smiley; 58% achieve Elite. Here in the UK, over 72% achieve 5 stars, but only 12% are eligible for Elite. So it is important to note that, whist Elite outlets really are the best of the best, it does not neccasarily mean that other food outlets are not performing to the top standard. They may simply not have been open long enough to have received 3 inspections.
