Jackson, one of the founding RCMAR Directors, MCUAAAR Co-PI, and a giant in the field of black aging research. Most importantly he was a mentor to generations of minority scientists some of which have now become Deans, Associate Provosts, Department Chairs, Endowed Professors and leaders in their fields of study. During our 2017 RCMAR Annual Meeting, Dr. Jackson s career was celebrated and he was awarded with a certificate from the National Institute on Aging (video below) in recognition of outstanding service in advancing the mission of the National Institute on Aging and the Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research.”In this week’s Scientist Highlights, we congratulate Burel Goodin, PhD, who became a Deep South Resource Center for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR) Scientist in 2013, for being awarded the Provost’s Award for Faculty Excellence from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Goodin is known for offering undergraduates opportunities to get hands-on research experience and invest themselves in projects, actively ensuring students work directly with study participants in critical ways. He also creates fun and relaxed, yet productive and successful lab environments that promote open dialogue and friendship among students, many of whom he mentors personally.Visit the Deep South Resource Center for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR) Center website.Early stage investigators are eligible for a new program to fund their innovative projects that represent a change in research direction and for which no preliminary data exist. Dr. Halima Amjad is an assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include geriatric medicine and geriatric psychiatry, with a focus on individuals living with dementia. Her research focuses on informing and improving the care of older adults with dementia with research into safety, undiagnosed dementia, health services and new models of care.In this week’s Scientist Highlights, we feature Monica Diaz, MD, who became a San Diego Resource Center for advancing Alzheimer s Research in Minority Seniors (ARMS) RCMAR Scientist in 2019. Dr. Diaz is a post-doctoral fellow at University of California, San Diego who is board certified in Neurology and specializes in neurological complications of HIV and neuroimmunology. Her research interests include effects of HIV-associated co-infections on neurocognitive impairment, ethnic health disparities of HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment in the U.S., and the overlap of HIV and Alzheimer’s Disease. In this week’sScientist Highlights, we congratulate Diana Hernandez, PhD, on being awarded tenure. Dr. Hernandez became RCMAR Scientist in 2019 at the Columbia Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Alzheimer s Disease Disparities (CIRAD AD RCMAR). Her work focuses on community-oriented research examining the intersections between the built environment, poverty/equity and health. She also serves as the Director for the Community Outreach and Translation Core at the Center. So you finally got the summary statement back, what do you do after the initial shock?  Let’s talk about how to respond effectively to the “pink sheets” and revise your application. On November 13, Dr. Joseph Gallo discussed steps to take in responding, with examples. The Columbia Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Alzheimer s Disease Disparities (CIRAD), a National Institute on Aging funded Alzheimer’s Disease-related Resource Center for Minority Aging Research (AD-RCMAR), is soliciting applications for it s pilot project program.
