Shure Reminds Online Shoppers About Fake Websites
InformationShureJenThorpe

With the holiday shopping season upon us, more people will be making purchases online and the potential for scams is increasing as watchdog groups are warning consumers to be careful about their online purchases.

Shure wants to remind people who are purchasing directly from Shure to confirm that they are visiting the authentic Shure website. Many scams include fake websites that have a similar URL with a company name included and are designed to look like a genuine company website. This dishonest tactic is particularly common with banks and retailers, and is now being seen with other brands as the technology to mirror the look and feel of a company website has become more advanced.

The only Shure website in the U.S. that sells Shure produces is Shure.com. Any other website in the U.S. purporting to be an official Shure company website and offering Shure produces for purchase may be a fake website designed to steal consumer credit card information.

While it is very easy to be directed to a legitimate-looking search result based on a search engine query, sometimes, those search results can include dangerous websites. The lure of deep discounts on those websites that look like an official company site can also be enticing.

Shure doesn’t sell products through a factory outlet or sell refurbished or returned products. Beware of sites that include “factory” or “outlet” in the URL. For customers who prefer to purchase from an authorized Shure dealer instead of the company website, the Authorized Retailer tool at shure.com is highly recommended to avoid purchasing from an unauthorized seller.

Catalinbread Releases The Cloak
InformationCatalinbreadJenThorpe

Catalinbread released the Cloak. Right now, there is Early Black Friday pricing on The Cloak. It is currently priced at $178.49. (Regular price: $209.99).

Catalinbread describes The Cloak this way:

The Cloak began after unearthing some ancient texts containing some forbidden incantations on how to introduce spectral elements within a decaying echo. Ok, we’re embellishing a bit; but the inspiration came from the land of academia and the acoustics department at Stanford, where a treatise on the optimal shimmer effect was penned a handful of years back. In a similar pursuit of perfection, we’ve drawn inspiration from a combination of research and our own endeavors to craft a truly superb take on shimmer reverb.

At its core, the Cloak is a “room” style reverb that sounds amazing on its own, but with a twist of the Shimmer knob, rich, harmonically-laden overtones creep in, emphasizing three different orders of harmonics out before they get to out of hand and wreck up the signal path. The size of the room can be effortlessly dialed in, from a cramped broom closet to as close to infinity as we can possibly muster.

This comes in handy when deciding on which type of switching you prefer; The Cloak offers up true bypass switching the cuts off the reverb trails when The Cloak is disengaged, or buffered bypass, which keeps the decay going even after switching off your pick. Either way you slice it, the Cloak is ready to impart a little black magic unto your rig.

Controls:

Room Size: Simultaneously adjusts both reverb decay length and a slight gain enhancement for a more natural decay

Mix: Adjusts the amount of dry signal present in the output, from 100 percent dry to 100 percent wet

High Cut: Cuts higher-order harmonics from the signal to soften the edges at higher Shimmer settings

Shimmer: Mixes the amount of shimmer present in the room reverb. Fully CCW gives you a rich room reverb and fully CW serves up a harmonically rich shimmer

Roland Announced JX-08 and JD-08 Sound Machine
InformationRolandJenThorpe

Roland announced the JX-08 and JD-08 Sound Modules, the latest additions to the award-winning Roland Boutique lineup of compact electronic instruments. The JX-08 offers a scaled-down recreation of the JX-8P, one of the last analog synthesizers produced by Roland in the 1980s and a highly sought-after piece for vintage synth fans.

The JD-08 is a compact reproduction of Roland’s JD-800 synthesizer, an influential digital instrument from the early 1990s loved for its complex, gleaming sound and comprehensive hands-on control.

In 1985, Roland’s innovative JX-8P took hybrid keyboard design to the next level, fusing analog synthesis with precision digital control. Top session players instantly embraced its compelling new voice, forever embedding the instrument’s warm pads, shimmery chorus, and crystalline textures into the most popular songs of the era. The JX-08 reintroduces the unique sounds of the JX-8P in stunning detail, coupled with powerful new effects, a polyphonic sequencer, and more.

The JX-08 features expanded polyphony, two-part multitimbral capability, and dual/split modes. It also includes 32 presets from the original hardware and 100-plus new patches tuned for contemporary styles. And to enhance the creative workflow, there’s a full panel of hands-on controls derived from the companion PG-800 programmer unit for the original hardware. After crafting sounds, users can store their creations in 256 preset slots for easy recall.

By the early 1990s, preset-driven digital synths with limited tactile controls dominated the landscape. The JD-800 changed all that in 1991, bringing the synthesizer world back to its roots with a control-laden panel and an aggressively electronic sound palette. Combining the original JD-800 waveforms with advanced modeling techniques, the JD-08 delivers the exquisite hands-on sound design of the original, with hugely expanded polyphony, a two-part polyphonic sequencer, and other modern updates.

The JX-08 includes 64 presets from the original hardware and perfectly recreates the four-tone structure, 108 waveforms, and unique two-part multi-effects behind the JD-800’s intricate, evolving sound. It also features a miniature version of the well-stocked JD-800 control panel, giving users an inspiring selection of sliders, buttons, and knobs for on-the-spot sound manipulation.

The JX-08 and JD-08 feature a built in USB-C audio/MIDI interface for working with computer production software, along with full-size MIDI I/O for connecting with other MIDI hardware. An external clock input is also available on each unit, allowing users to drive the onboard sequencer and arpeggiator from vintage analog instruments and modern Eurorack systems.

Like all Roland Boutique modules, the JX-08 and JD-08 are highly portable and can run on USB bus power or batteries. Each module also includes a built-in speaker for mobile sound monitoring. And when mounted in an optional K-25m Keyboard Unit, the JX-08 or JD-08 can be used as a compact, all-in-one synth with 25 velocity-sensitive keys.

Panasonic Announced Lightweight LUMIX S 35mm F1.8
InformationPanasonicJenThorpe

Panasonic announced a new large-aperture wide focal length lens, the LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 (S-S85), as the fourth addition to the series of four F1.8 large-aperture lenses based on the L-Mount system standard. A total of four F1.8 fixed focal length lenses from the LUMIX S Series including 85mm (S-S85), 50mm (S-S50), 24mm (S-S24) and the new 35mm (S-S35) lens feature a common size and position of control parts to provide practical advantages in use.

The center of gravity of these lenses is comparable, allowing easy and quick exchanging of lenses with minimum balance adjustment when the camera is on a gimbal. Consistent diameter also enables the use of common filters, and users will benefit from its descriptive performance.

The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 is comprised of eleven lens elements in nine groups including three aspherical lenses and three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lenses. The use of three aspherical lenses realizes both high descriptive performance and beautiful bokeh, which are common advantages to the series of all F1.8 lenses.

The ED menses also effectively suppress chromatic aberration. The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 is suitable for versatile situations including landscapes, snapshots, and portraits. Minimum focusing distance of 0.24m also produces high-quality close-ups.

The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 is capable of smooth, silent operation, working with the camera’s high-speed, high-precision contrast AF system with the sensor drive at max.240 fps. For the non-linear setting, focus is shifted with a designated amount according to the rotational quantum of the focus ring for the linear setting. Sensitivity, or the amount of focus shift per rotational quantum, can be selected from 90 to 360 degrees by 30 degrees to enable intended focus operation.

The LUMIX 35mm F1.8 also excels in video recording performance with a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, which was a fatal problem of all interchangeable lenses designed for still image photography. Together with a micro-step aperture control for smooth exposure change, the lens achieves professional quality video recording.

With its approximately 295g compact size and light weight, the LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 features stunning mobility to fit the S5, LUMIX’s smallest full-frame model. The rugged dust/splash-resistant design withstands use under harsh conditions even at 10 degrees below zero for high mobility. The filter diameter is 67 mm, with a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

Eventide Introduces SplitEQ
InformationEventideJenThorpe

Eventide introduced SplitEQ. It is the first fundamental advance in equalization since George Massenburg’s invention of the parametric EQ 50 years ago. It’s designed to go beyond and to replace your current EQ.

Right now, SplitEQ is on sale at $99. (Previous price $179).

SplitEQ excels at Repairing, Rebalancing, Enhancing, and Widening any audio source. It’s both a surgical tool for fixing particularly nasty problems and a creative tool as it opens up exciting new musical possibilities.

SplitEQ reduces the distance between what you want to do and how you actually do it, and with fewer tradeoffs than other EQs. On a normal EQ, a low-shelf boost on a kick drum will yield muddiness rather than delicious oomph. A low cut on a low male vocal removes plosives but at the expense of low-end richness. SplitEQ gives you the surgical control to address the problematic part of a sound without losing the magic and without the need for additional tools.

At first glance, its a parametric EQ with 8-bands of precise musical filters. What’s new and different is Eventide’s powerful Structural Split engine which divides the incoming audio into separate Transient and Tonal streams that feed the 8 bands. This approach makes common EQ problems easy to solve even in a complex mix.

What to soften the transients? Use the master Transient Gain slider.

Remove plosives or de-ess? EQ only the Transient.

Reduce snare ring? Put a filter on the Tonal miss.

By applying EQ and panning to Transient and Tonal separately, you can fix many of the problems normally attacked using complex combinations of EQ, compression, transient designers, de-essers, multi-band compression, spatial processors, or dynamic EQ. Simplify and declutter your workflow, get better results, and create new sounds.

BOSS Adds FZ-1W to the WAZA Craft Pedal Series
InformationBOSSJenThorpe

BOSS introduces the FZ-1W Fuzz, the latest member of the acclaimed Waza Craft family of compact effect pedals. Realized through deep analysis of many legendary fuzz pedals and detailed Waza craftsmanship, the all-analog FZ-1W delivers the inspiring tone, feel, and vibe of classic fuzz in a reliable modern design. And like all Waza Craft pedals, the FZ-1W features premium components for top-quality performance and different operation modes for maximum tonal versatility.

When introduced in the 1960s, fuzz pedals changed the game for electric guitarists, giving them a bold and aggressive new voice that reshaped the sound of rock music forever. The simple circuits of the most sought-after vintage fuzz units produce bright and aggressive tones with long sustain, and they’re very sensitive to playing dynamics and input volume as well. But these classic pedals are also famously inconsistent—even between models of the same design—and variables like age, battery type, temperature, and more can have a dramatic effect on their sound and performance.

Backed by Waza innovation, the FZ-1W offers all the great musical characteristics of vintage fuzz without the downsides. While inspired by historic circuits, this pedal presents an all-new approach fueled by BOSS’s forward-thinking perspective and deep knowledge of effect design. Using top-quality silicon transistors, BOSS engineers have created a unique circuit that provides authentic tone and response while maintaining stable performance in any temperature or operating condition. The sound possibilities have also been expanded over vintage designs, offering higher gain, lower noise, deeper tone-shaping control, and more.

With the FZ-1W’s Vintage mode, BOSS has redefined the classic fuzz voice with more gain and wider expressive range. The sound character is raspy and assertive without being harsh, and the player can smoothly transition from heavy fuzz to crunch to crystal clean simply by riding their guitar’s volume. The powerful Tone knob simultaneously adjusts the high and low frequencies to produce a variety of different fuzz colors. And by turning down the Fuzz knob and cranking the Level, the FZ-1W works great as a boost for amps and other gain pedals.

Modern mode on the FZ-1W delivers a more refined and versatile fuzz voice with focused midrange and fatter tone, making it ideal for all types of current music styles. The gain range is even wider than Vintage mode, and dialing the Fuzz knob past three o’clock conjures rich, singing sustain for inspired solo playing. The Tone knob also offers a different tuning that lets players tweak the brightness without altering the midrange, ensuring their sound always cuts through. And when used as a boost, Modern mode dishes a heap of girth with rich, mid-driven character.

The FZ-1W Fuzz will be available in the U.S. in early November for $199.99.

Roland Announces JD-800 Software Synthesizer
InformationRolandJenThorpe

Roland announced the JD-800 Software Synthesizer, the latest edition to the Legendary series of software-based Roland instruments available through Roland Cloud.

In early 2021 30 years after the debut of the original JD-800 hardware synth Roland introduced the JD-800 Model Expansion for the ZENOLOGY software synthesizer and select ZEN-CORE hardware instruments.

The JD-800 is an authentic software recreation of the iconic ‘90s digital synth, available exclusively through Roland Cloud.

The anniversary celebration continues with the release of this iconic digital instrument as a dedicated DAW plug-in. The JD-800 Software Synthesizer delivers a virtual recreation of the original’s unique sound and inviting control-laden interface, along with a host of new features and enhancements for today’s music producers.

In the early 1990s, preset-driven digital synths with limited hands-on controls dominated the landscape. The JD-800 changed all that in 1991, bringing the synthesizer world back to its roots with a massive control-filled panel and an unapologetically electronic sound palette. An instant hit among the world’s top keyboard players, this innovative instrument found its way onto classic albums and numerous film and television scores, and it remains highly sought after to this day.

The JD-800 Software Synthesizer is painstakingly crafted to sound and behave exactly like the original hardware. Rather than simply combining a bunch of JD-800 samples, Roland used the original waveform data along with advanced modeling techniques to perfectly recreate the big, bright, spacious sound that only the JD-800 can deliver.

A key ingredient of the JD-800’s sound was its formidable multistage effects section. It’s been carefully recreated in the plug-in and enhanced with an expanded view for real-time tweaking. In addition to a master EQ, there are seven effects with adjustable controls and the ability to change the signal flow with drag-and-drop actions.

The JD-800 Sofware Synthesizer includes 64 newly crafted presets that show how inspiring and evocative the synth can be in a modern context.

And with the plug-in’s extensive array of top-level controls, users can easily create all-new sounds to make their music stand out from the crowd.
