Minnesota's first German-language newspaper, the Minnesota Deutsche Zeitung, is published in St. Paul by editors Friedrich Orthwein and Albert Wolff. It is the second non-English newspaper in Minnesota, the first being Dakota Tawaxitu Kin (Dakota Friend), published in English and Dakota by missionary Gideon H. Pond from 1850 to 1852. The singing Hutchinson family of New Hampshire founds the town of Hutchinson in McLeod County. From 1841 until the close of the Civil War, the Hutchinsons toured the United States giving concerts of popular and patriotic songs. Anoka's Monte Carlo casino is robbed by two masked men. An article in the Anoka Herald reports that "the whole thing was carried out with good humor," although it was likely not humorous for the attendant who is shot twice by the robbers when he tries to escape. Super Value Groceries receives Minnesota's first shipment of air freighted vegetables. The cargo includes tomatoes, asparagus, figs, and avocados, and a special basket is given to Minneapolis Mayor Hubert H. Humphrey and Governor Edward J. Thye. Radioactive cooling water from the Monticello Nuclear Power Plant overflows its tank and eventually reaches the Mississippi River. European American Women at Fort Snelling, 1819–1858 When the Fifth Infantry Regiment came west in 1819 to build a fort on the bluff where the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers flow together, some of the soldiers brought their wives and daughters with them. Women and girls made up around 20 percent of the fort’s population from the time of the first census in 1849 until at least 1900. These women included the wives and daughters of officers but also lower-class women (wives and daughters of enlisted men, as well as their servants).
