All give shape to the cultural melting pot that Boquete is today. Most farms and houses still have architectural styles that are reminiscent of these other countries. The Bocas del Toro Archipelago is home to about 17,000 residents. During the 17th century, the archipelago became a haven for pirates. Panama City is the southern entrance to the Panama Canal and has a population of around 1 million people. It's an important banking hub and is the location of Tocumen Airport (PTY), the busiest airport in Central America. Panama City has always been a place of transit and its inhabitants reflect a mixture of people from all over the world. There are a large number of Afro-Panamanians, Mestizos (European and Native American descent), Mulattos (mix of black and white) and a significant minority of whites and Asian.
