Flying for Freedom provides recovery support to Wounded Injured and Sick (WIS) Service personnel and veterans through flying, and is entirely run by volunteers most of whom are themselves WIS and backed by some of the world’s best microlight pilots. Enable recovery by training new pilots annually and providing advanced training for our qualified pilots. Work opportunities; One of our pilots has recently qualified as a commercial airline pilot. Luke is a retired Captain who served with the Royal Engineers. He was injured on the 20th November 2010 while working as a Royal Engineer Search Adviser (RESA) in Afghanistan. Ironically the threat Luke was there to remove was his mechanism of his injury and the explosion from the IED took both of his legs above the knee and caused severe damage to both his arms.Luke has recovered from injury through the use of Sport and has represented his Country in Athletics both for Great Britain and the Armed Forces team at the Invictus Games. As well as training full time for future Paralympics Luke is also a pilot and trustee for Flying for Freedom, where he uses flying to help rehabilitate other Veterans. Luke is also part of the Veterans Gateway and is working to make support for veterans better and easier to access. Kat is currentlyin theRAF serving as anAir Operations Officer.Whilst deployed in Cyprus supporting F3 Tornado combat training in 2007, she contracted an infection in her footwhichresulted in damage to her brainstem. After a period of rehabilitation at Headley Court, she returned to work though now permanently needs crutches to help her walk.Kat tried a variety of adaptive sports such as skiing, sailing and bobsleighing before she joined Flying For Freedom in 2012 and gained her NPPL.She has been a regular participant in their expeditions in the UK, France and Sweden. Andy joined the Royal Air Force in 1983 as an Armourer, he suffered a Spinal Cord injury in the build up to the first Gulf War and was Medically Discharged in 1993.In 2014 he competed in the first Invictus Games which totally changed his outlook on life from dwelling on the past and what he could't do to a much more positive concentration on what he could do.He started his flying training with us in 2015, managed to come off opiate painkillers that he had become addicted to over the past 20 years and qualified as pilot in 2016.Eventually, he hopes to become a Flying Instructor for us.Andy is also our Chief Engineer. James joined the British Army in 2004 and worked as an Air Dispatcher on the C130 Hercules Aircraft. During his time in the British Army he did operational tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. It was during his time as an Air Dispatcher that he developed a love for flying. Since leaving the Army James went back to university and trained to be a secondary school teacher.He qualified as a pilot in June 2019 and is keen to gain more experience from the other pilots within Flying for Freedom. He is also looking forward to using flying to help have a positive impact on veterans. Louis joined the army at 16 joining the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as an avionics technician. Serving at home and over seas as part of fixed and rotary wing squadrons.Having always had a keen interest in aviation and flying, at the time of injury having completed aptitude tests an opportunity to begin selection to become a military pilot had presented itself. Having trapped his leg in an accident overseas irreparable damage saw the loss of his right leg in 2018.An air experience day with Flying For Freedom promoted by BLESMA relit his passion for flying and in March 2018 he began training to obtain his National Private Pilots Licence (A). After successful training packages in France and the UK Louis completed the required hours and tests to apply for his licence in July 2018. It has been a life changing year so far, from loosing the ability to walk, run, play rugby and move around, the ability to command an aircraft and the freedom of flying has given back something that has been missing for a long time. Troy joined the Royal Logistic Corps in 1996 (Driver), transferring to Royal Engineers in 2003 (Welder) and is due to be medically discharged after 23 years of service. He has completed operational tours in Ireland, Kosovo and Iraq as well as serving in Germany, Cyprus, Kenya, Brunei and Norway.His taste for activities involving airsports started in 1997 on passing his military British Parachute training, followed shortly by completing his French parachute course. He then gained his Club Pilot Paragliding licence and competed in the 2001 Inter-services and Tri-Services Paragliding competition wining both Novice classes. He sustained his original back injury whilst participating. He then gained his Freefall Parachute qualification as part of the Royal Engineer Parachute Team.Troy become extremely ill during 2015, contracting various bacterial infections which lead to a lengthy admission to the Intensive Care Unit at Addenbrookes hospital followed by two admissions to the military hospital Headley Court. The infections have left him with permanent damage and chronic pain in his back, neck and hands along with neurological damage and early Osteoarthritis.Troy qualified as a Microlight Pilot in July 2019. His future aspirations are to gain his thee axis Microlight rating and eventually fly a Seaplane. He strongly believes that the training and continued support from Flying for Freedom has helped him focus his mind, helped his recovery transition from military to civilian life and hopes he can now give back his time and experiences to support others. Mike joined the Royal Air Force in 1978 and served for 38 years before being medically discharged in 2016.In more recent times Mike has re-joined the Royal Air Force and is based at RAF Waddington on a part time basis.He learnt how to paraglide during his time in the Royal Air Force and this has now developed into paramotoring as a regular past time.As part of his recovery and transition he applied to Flying for Freedom to fly microlights and passed his National Private Pilots Licence in July 2019. James is an experienced professional expedition leader who has led numerous expeditions of all types worldwide including three previous expeditions to Antarctica with the Royal Patronage of HRH Prince Charles. He has successfully, made world first ascents of remote unclimbed mountains, sailed and travelled overland in uncharted territory all whilst delivering significant publicity for major sponsors. He was elected to be a full member of the Alpine Club in 1992.James is the co-founder of Flying for Freedom and currently Chair of the Trustees. Air Marshal Greg Bagwell served for 36 years in the Royal Air Force, leading at all levels, and retired as the Deputy Commander and a member of the Air Force Board.He joined in 1981 as a combat pilot and flew the Tornado GR1, GR4 and F-18 Hornet on operations for over 20 years. The latter half of his service career saw him become the RAF's most experienced operational commander, where he oversaw combat operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria, as well as numerous humanitarian and peace keeping missions world-wide. He was the UK s first Director of Joint Warfare, where he was responsible for the development of all UK military capability. For his final tour of duty, he was responsible for the force generation and delivery of the RAF s entire contribution to operations at home and overseas.He is a graduate of the Indian Defence Services and Staff College, Wellington. He has recently been appointed as the Head of Business Development for Cobham plc. In addition, he is the President of the UK Air Power Association, and he continues to mentor senior UK defence commanders and lecture widely on defence and air power issues and his leadership experience. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute, and an RAF volunteer reservist pilot providing air experience flights for air cadets. Charlie continued working in the explosive ordnance disposal sector until recently. In 2005, Charlie and two fellow Commandos raced on skis to the North Pole. A year later he created another team of fellow Commandos to row an epic voyage across the North Atlantic Ocean, West to East, taking 85 days and earning two Guinness World Records in the process. Not content with this, Charlie attempted to row solo and unsupported from Japan to the USA but his journey was brought to a premature end after encountering severe weather.Charlie is an Officer in the Army Reserve, a Trustee of Flying For Freedom and is a keen supporter of military Veterans welfare. Richard was for 6 years, World President of the Microlight Commission of the F d ration A ronautique Internationale (FAI) and has been listed by the Daily Telegraph in the top 20 Great British Adventurers.His notable achievements are:-London to Harare, Zimbabwe (12,500 miles).The first flight over Mount Everest in a microlight,at the same time towing a hang-glider.The first to fly a microlight 13,000 miles from London to Sydney, at the same time accompanying a blind pilot. He presented the BBC2 TV Series The New Business Troubleshooter and is a regular contributor across the international media, appearing on TV & radio & in newspapers where his views and opinions find a regular audience.He is involved in several charities including Cancer Research UK, The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity and Ovarian Cancer Action. Jim French CBE is the Scots-born former chairman and CEO of the airline Flybe, and is credited with turning it into Europe s largest regional airline.Jim was educated at Ayr Academy and Strathclyde University before beginning his aviation career as a clerk for Caledonian Airways in 1970. He rose through the ranks and joined Air UK Limited in 1980, holding senior roles in commercial, planning and marketing areas. In 1990, he joined Jersey European Airways, which later became British European. Throughout the 1990s, he held the posts of commercial director and later, Deputy Chief Executive. Jack Walker, the airline s owner, died in 2000 and Jim became CEO just months before the 9/11 terror attacks in the US. The airline was in danger of going under at this time, but Jim persuaded the Walker family to rebrand British European as a no-frills operator, resulting in the birth of Flybe.It was in 2002 that Jim developed the plan which transformed Flybe into Europe s largest regional airline. He began a period of major expansion, launching new services and acquiring BA Connect. He was appointed Executive Chairman of the Flybe Group in 2005, and the business was floated on the stock market in 2010, a year in which it carried 7.2 million passengers, approximately half of whom were business travellers. Lieutenant General Philip Jones served for 36 years in the British Army, with three secondments to the United Nations and two to NATO.An infantryman, he is the Colonel of the Regiment for the Royal Anglian Regiment and is Chair of Trustees for the Royal Anglian Regiment Benevolent Charity.He has extensive operational experience; most recently he served for over three years in Afghanistan. Rory Underwood is probably best known for his international rugby career. Not only for scoring a record 49 tries for England (85 caps, 1984-1996) but also for winning 6 caps for the British Lions touring Australia (1989) and New Zealand (1993). Additionally, Rory played first class rugby at Leicester Tigers for 14 years. Rory spent 18 year as a pilot in the Royal Air Force flying over 3000hrs on Tornados, Canberras, Hawks and Domines and was responsible for introducing Human Factors (HF) training into the RAF.A consultant since 1999, Rory combines the wealth of experience from international sport, the military, extreme human achievement and the tried and tested formula of personal and team development to create processes for individuals, teams and organisations to inspire performance. He is an experienced facilitator, psychometric profiler and performance coach. Dave is one of our Mentor pilots. He broke his back at the T8 vertebrae in 1993.He took up microlighting in 2000 He found a Pegasus XL a large, slow microlight, had some hand controls fitted to it and he got his licence on April 1, 2001, but soon realised he couldn t fly big distances with the 43-mph XL, so he bought a Mainair Blade 912, capable of 60mph +, which he flew for 2 years. During this period he flew the English Channel and on to Spain, and flew to Ireland and back, He now has 650+ hours experience flying.He has since bought a P&M Aviation QuikR and had hand controls made and approved for it. He has been to Spain, France, Ireland and flew over the Alps to Italy at over 10,000ft. In 2007 Flew a P&M GT450 down through France, Italy, Sicily around Mount Etna to Malta to be the first Microlight to fly from England down to Malta.in 2011 Dave Sykes flew SOLO from York uk to Sydney Australia, this amazing trip took 4 months to complete and covered over 16,000 miles and 257 hours flying making him the first paraplegic in the world to do it. Rob is our Chief Flying Instructor and has been flying microlights for nearly 30 years and has more than 2,300 hours of flying experience.Rob has been an enthusiastic competitor in national and international competitions. Since starting in 1994 he has won Gold, two Silver and three Bronze medals in international microlighting competitions.2014 was a great year as Rob has, for the first time, become the dual seat British National Champion, as well as coming 3rd in the World Championship in Hungary. Prior to this event Rob also participated in the Microlight Tour de France and also won the competition in that event.In 2003 Rob was competition director for the World Microlight Championships in the UK and then again in France in 2005.He has been farming on the family farm at Over, Gloucester, since he left college in 1981.
