Description:

About Flyability What is Flyability?Flyability is the disability initiative of the British Hang Gliding Paragliding Association. The BHPA is the UK governing body of the sport of hang gliding and paragliding. We are a small group of volunteers that work in our spare time to make free flight accessible to anyone who wants to fly.Flyability strives to motivate disabled people to become involved in the sport of hang gliding and paragliding and to train as pilots. We do this byencouraging disabled people to train at theBHPA registered schoolof their choice alongside non-disabled student pilots (where possible).Much of Flyability’s work in the sport, focuses around changing peoples’ perception of disability and their attitudes toward disabled people.Disability awareness, education and advice play key roles in Flyability’s aims and objectives, as does the development ofspecialist equipment, training and flying techniques.Flyability promotes and funds tandem flying for disabled people who may be unable to fly alone or who may need to try out different types of flying to find the form most suited to them. Flyability s tandem flight scholarships and solo student pilot scholarshipsare the main use of its charitable funds. The BHPA Flyability Initiative has formal status within the BHPA’s structure and reports directly to the BHPA’s Executive Council on disability related matters within the sport. Flyability doesn't provide flights directly. We work with all BHPA paragliding and hang gliding schools to make flying more accessible. We recommend that you look at our New to flying page to decide which type of flying and launch will suit you and then approach your nearest BHPA schools offering that sort of flying to find out if they can accommodate you. There are very few disabilities that would prevent flying completely. Some disabilities might only allow you to fly safely tandem.Every person is different so we recommend that you look at our New to flying page to decide which type of flying and launch will suit you and then approach your nearest BHPA schools offering that sort of flying to find out if they can accommodate you. Yes and no. We don't have the funds to support paramotor training. However our scholarships can be used to train to Club Pilot level on paragliders with a winch tow. This followed by conversion to paramotors is one of the ways to qualify to fly paramotors. Our scholarships are available to all UK resident disabled people. We will award scholarships to people with physical, sensory and mental disabilities. If you claim DLA/PIP then a copy of your entitlement letter from the DWP will be accepted as proof of disability and UK residence. If you aren't in receipt of DLA/PIP then we will assess your eligibility based on any evidence that you can provide. This could be a letter from a doctor, physiotherapist, support worker or social worker or a similar professional. If you're applying for a scholarship using evidence of this type then please also provide us with proof of UK residency. Flyability is a registered charity (no. 1059197) in England and Wales. You can check Flyability s charity credentials at the Charity Commissions web-site, and/or to go straight to the Flyability page within the same on-line registry of charities, click here. You can make a donation to Flyability via Paypal by clicking the button below.
