July finds the Elks in the busiest season of the year, with something happening almost every day of the week. Golf tournaments, dinners, and moreI strongly encourage all members to tune into the weekly emailed update from our awesome Activities Committee Chair Tracy Dorigo to keep up with all the goings on.
A great highlight came in this month. the official numbers were in, and Moscow placed third in all lodges in Idaho for membership gain! We had a net gain of 27 members, with only Sandpoint and Coeur dAlene pulling ahead with a gain of 32 and 81 respectively. Great work and lets keep up the positive momentum! If there are folks out there looking to join and they need some help with references or anything else, please let me know or direct them to Wayne or Tracy, we will get them squared away.
Key to our lodge functioning and ability to support our community are the Committees that coordinate and direct our Veterans, Youth Activities and Charity programs, among many others. There are many places on these committees that need engaged individuals to join and drive the good work forward. All interested members that would like to become more involved please reach out and I am sure we can find a great fit!
Lastly, I would like to congratulate our newly appointed Trustee Todd Martin, and Inner Guard Will Greene. It is humbling to be able to appoint great members like them to serve our Lodge and Membership, and I am absolutely excited to have their broad experience on the leadership team. The lodge cannot function without such great people stepping up to serve our members in these critical roles. I would strongly encourage all Members who have a thought about joining the Officers or Trustees to reach out and talk to those currently in these positions about joining and serving our lodge in these functions next year!
God Bless,
Benjamin McGuckin,
Exalted Ruler Moscow Lodge #249
Posted in bar/dining, Golf Course, history, humanitarian, Lodge, veterans, volunteers, youth activities Leave a comment From the Desk of the Secretary June 30, 2021Congratulations! Our Lodge is on a roll with increased membership. As Exalted Ruler Ben mentioned, our Moscow Lodge was third in the State last year for increased membership. On top of that, we have already brought in 14 new members and reinstatements with 6 more awaiting voting and/or initiation. I have had more people call and come into our office asking, “how do they become an Elk”? Many of the folks asking this question have just moved into the area and they want to be part of the community. Somehow, they have found out that being an Elk is a great way to give back to our community. It has been a challenge for our Membership Committee to find current members that know them so they can be properly sponsored and have two references, but they are getting the job done! Now, if we can just get the 32 members that are still in arrears of their dues to pay up-we will be in great shape!
It looks like it is going to be a hot, dry summer so try to enjoy it without passing out from heat stroke. Remember when it was in the 50’s and 60’s with 20 mph winds and how it seemed so cold- well, you wanted it warmer, now it’s warmer. Have a great July!

The lodge will put on a First Responder’s 5K Challenge Race followed by the run/walk that will be open to the public and free of charge. In conjunction with this event, the University of Idaho’s Veteran’s Program will have a Memorial March from the lodge to downtown Moscow. This is an event that will be extremely impactful to our lodge. So, if you have been waiting to volunteer for the right purpose with the Elks, this is it. Please help. A huge thank you for your donations and attending the 3rd annual Father’s Day 9-hole scramble. We could not have asked for better weather to celebrate our fathers and spend time with family and friends. It was a huge success raising $2,000 for Idaho Special Olympics (75% stays locally with our Moscow Rebel Tiger Team and 25% to Idaho Special Olympics). We had a great turn out with 13 teams!
Prizes were given out to the
newest father, Carson Racicot with a 5-month-old;and the oldest father was Jack Nelson.Rick Hull sunk the longest putt at 25’ 5”.Closest to the “TIE” was Brock Peterson (your prize at Elks). The Sean Dorigo Family (Sean, Tracy, Robert and Paxton) was the winning team with a score of 26.Each winner received a $25 gift card (Starbucks, Subway, or Wingers). All fathers were honored with a free drink!Again, we are so grateful to for our generous Elks family and your support of our Special Olympians. It was a super fun day!
Remember to put August 6th on your calendar for the Light A Candle Tournament to support local community members battling cancer.
The Kyle Nelson Family

Flag Day is a celebration of the American flag that occurs each year on the anniversary of the flag’s official adoption on June 14, 1777.
June 14 was officially established as Flag Day by a proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Flag Day was not a national observance until 1949—President Harry Truman, himself an Elks member, was inspired through his Lodge in Independence Missouri, to sign an act of Congress that dedicated June 14 to the symbol of our country. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is the only fraternal organization to require a formal observance of Flag Day.
The lodge will conduct its annual Flag Day Service on Monday, at 6:30pm. The ceremony will take place in front of the Lodge located at 3080 Highway 8, Moscow, Idaho. This is an open ceremony and all local residents are invited to attend.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks has made more than $12 billion in donations since it first started 153 years ago. Last year alone, the Elks donated approximately $300 million in cash, gifts and time to make our communities better places to live. The Elks are one of the premier patriotic and charitable organizations in the United States of America. Annually, the Elks award college scholarships across the nation totaling more than $4.5 million. The Elks Community Investment Program will award nearly $15 million towards enriching our communities. The Elks National Foundation also granted $10 million to the state Elks associations through State Charities Grants, Special Project Grants and Bonus Grants, which help fund each state’s charitable activities.
