Polyp and lesion recognition is an ever growing concern for all practicing gastroenterologists as early diagnosis naturally results in better prognosis and patient outcomes. With smart technology such as artificial intelligence and machine learning systems, the scope of diagnostics in the field of endoscopy has opened up new horizons. Similarly the field of therapeutics in IBD is expanding rapidly with new compounds being developed and introduced in market as the prevalence of this debilitating disease increases worldwide.
For our more junior physicians, residents in training and medical students, we have devised special workshops on GI simulation with hands-on experience using our latest GI Endoscopy Simulators that will be shown in the conference. The nursing program is equally rich as always and will cater to the pressing practice-relevant needs of the GI endoscopy nurses in the country.
In addition to our esteemed local faculty and session chairs, the congress faculty features internationally recognized experts in advanced endoscopy: Professor Alessandro Repici, Director of Digestive Endoscopy Unit at Humanitas Research Hospital, Milan, Italy and Professor Pradeep Bhandari, Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Solent Centre for Digestive Diseases, Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, United Kingdom.
For the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases component of our conference, we are delighted to have Professor James Lindsay who is world renowned figure in inflammatory bowel disease. Professor Lindsay is the Education Officer and a member of the Governing Board of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO). Professor Glenn Doherty is a Professor of Medicine and Consultant Gastroenterologist, School of Medicine, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland.
Aside from our well organized hands-on endoscopy workshops, a congress feature this year also is the live and interactive endoscopy sessions from the world leading European Endoscopy Center in the Humanitas Research Hospital, Milan, Italy.
In keeping with the EDDW culture, we enjoy multidisciplinary and integrated approaches to the topics discussed catering to the needs of primary care physicians, physicians, surgeons and gastroenterologists. The faculty will focus on both the current standards as well as the latest innovations in patient management. Moreover, I am sure that our delegates can find endless networking opportunities with our international and regional speakers.
Looking forward to seeing you all in June 2020.

We are excited to share EDDW 2020 scientific program which, this year, is unique in combining clinical paradigms with innovations in Gastrointestinal medicine including first ever programme in GI Simulation. The Congress program will focus on following themes;
Innovations in GI endoscopy, including advances in lesion recognition as well as therapeutic techniques IBD- Diagnosis to the Management- A multi-disciplinary paradigm A dedicated state-of- the-art session on GI simulation. “Tips and Tricks” in ERCP and innovations in HPB endoscopy skills.
In the era of minimally invasive techniques, early lesion recognition and targeted therapy is paramount and quite often than not clinicians come across these challenging scenarios. Polyp recognition is becoming an increasingly important issue particularly with advancements of early cancer detection and evolving Endotherapy. Most GI physicians would be interested in this area as it reflects their daily clinical practice. This year the program will provide the opportunity to update your knowledge and understanding with the help and expertise from the Pioneers in this field such as Professor Alessandro Repici and Professor Pradeep Bhandari. They are research leaders in the field, and both have contributed to currently utilized clinical practice guidelines and pioneered therapeutic procedures.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is another very common condition (200,000 cases annually in the United States), yet debilitating and expensive for patients (healthcare costs associated with IBD are 6-7 times higher than average), healthcare systems (higher pharmacy and hospital costs) and industry (absenteeism, lost productivity).
This year’s Emirates Digestive Diseases International Conference (EDDW2020) features a multi-disciplinary approach to IBD management and includes diagnosis, symptom management, Quality of Life (QoL) and early treatment of this increasingly recognized GI condition. Major focus will be on endoscopic identification of polyps from commonly encountered to difficult-to- diagnose polyp to aid GI physicians stratify appropriate therapy. The Congress faculty features internationally recognized experts, Professors James Lindsey and Glenn Doherty who are leading experts in inflammatory bowel disease and have written many guidelines concerning the subject for the BSG and other international societies.
GI simulation: Whilst technology is moving at a fast pace and new endoscopic techniques being developed to support early detection and minimally invasive approach; it has become clear to devise an infrastructure for developing future workforce and training framework. There is now enough evidence to support that in gastrointestinal endoscopy, simulation-based training can help endoscopists acquire new skills and accelerate the learning curve. It creates an ideal environment for trainees, where they can practice and strengthen specific skills with no risk to patients. It equally promotes and enhance learning for experienced endoscopists. Emirates Digestive Diseases International Conference (EDDW2020, for the first time, features a dedicated session on GI simulation which caters the need for trainees as well as experienced clinicians to develop and enhance endoscopic skills. The congress will also highlight a session on “Tips and Tricks” to improve ERCP skills and innovations within the expanding field of Hepato-biliary endoscopy.
A new addition in 2020 is the GI Simulation subspecialty being developed at the United Arab Emirates University and Medical School which will soon deserve a standalone conference; information and updates will be provided.
The EDDW 2020, as similar to previous conferences, will also give special attention to nurses training and support. We have designed an excellent nursing program which also includes a dedicated session on equipment and unit management by several leading endoscopy nurses in the country. This always attracts a lot of attention from our esteem nursing colleagues.
Lastly, the congress will also show case “bespoke Live Endoscopy session” from the world-renowned European Endoscopy Centre in the Humanitas Research Hospital, Milan, Italy. This will also provide great opportunity to interact between all members of the healthcare team required to care for these complex patients. Focusing on the key role of the Primary Care Physician, interactions with Gastroenterologists (endoscopists), Pathologists, Radiologists, Surgeons and GI nurses will be facilitated in workshops and practical demonstrations.
