Many thanks to all the candidates. It was a great election! Over 90 members cast ballots. Welcome Ryan and Cecil to the Colorado Region SCCA Board of Directors, and welcome back Kevin! We owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to Ann Marie Stinehelfer and Chris Doyle for all they have contributed to Colorado Region over their BoD terms. Next time you see them, give them a hearty THANK YOU! LaJunta Improvements (GoFundMe) Goal: We seek to raise $7400 to cover the material cost of track improvements at LaJunta Raceway including adding several safety aprons and curbing to critical corners at the track. The total project will cost $27,400 and the City of LaJunta will cover $20, 000… basically a $3 for every $1 matching. These improvements will make for safer, faster races and other track events Background: The LaJunta Raceway track is owned by the City of LaJunta and is managed by Allan Lassiter, a LaJunta resident, car enthusiast and committed track manager. Allan offers prices that are a fraction of what other race track charges and hence generates small if any positive cash flow for upgrades. Over the last few years the SCCA, RMVR and many other clubs have held events there and enjoyed fun, low cost racing, and a fun town that supports the track in an amazing way. We have enjoyed the Mayor starting races, high school cheer leaders, cheering for our races and local car clubs coming out to display their vehicles for the enjoyment of all. Several years ago the city repaved a majority of the track and this year they started a multi-year program to repave the paddock area which is both needed and expensive. Up till this year the SCCA held only drivers’ schools and regional races at LaJunta. Early this year, because of the covid-19 virus, many race tracks were basically unavailable including all our other local tracks. In order to hold a major race our only choice was LaJunta. Allan cleared a weekend for us and the city and county allowed and supported the race (the Bob Lazer Memorial). The race was a fun and successful event with many out-of-state eager racers coming to get their racing year started. After the race, many conversations from thankful racers, lead to two recommendations for improvements. The first was repave the paddock (which the city has started at their expense) and second add some curbing on selected corners to improve the safety of track itself. Several SCCA members offered to personally contribute to help Allan and the track with the track improvements. After a series of discussion with the city, the following broader proposal was developed. If the motorsports community will contribute $7,400 the city will contribute $20,000 to add aprons and curbing. What an opportunity… $27,400 in improvements for $7,400. Just think, if we can get 74 car enthusiasts to contribute $100 (half the price of one race tire) we can enjoy over $27,000 in improvements, at a very fun race track. Feel free to contribute more if you can. Specific additions: Inside Turn 1 - a 485 ft long safety apron Inside Turn 3 - a 130 ft long curbing Outside Turn 3 exit -a curb/ apron (currently a drop off) -165 ft long Outside Turn 5 exit -a curb/apron (highest traffic off-asphalt section) - 185 ft long What this amounts to is... if the motorsports community will cover the cost of the materials (basically cement) the city will contract for and cover the cost of labor and excavation as required. The project would be performed in November 2020. There are two links below that will help visualize the changes. The first is a map of the track showing the planned changes. The second (with many thanks to Eric os simracing) is a simulation on the track showing the planned upgrades (link). This "Go Fund Me" is intended to raise $7640 ($240 for GFM) for the improvement of the LaJunta track. The fund will be closed at this level to net $7400 after GFM expenses. The funds will be delivered to the city of LaJunta upon completion of the project and they will pay the final bills and co-manage the project with Allan. Lets all jump in and help... please do it now!!!
