Some cell phone parts use coltan - an ore mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The deforestation and mining associated with coltan production has impacted and displaced gorillas, moving them closer to extinction. Recycling our electronic devices reduces the demand for coltan mining. When we lessen the demand for coltan, we are helping to protect gorillas in the wild! 

We need your help! This year, the Calgary Zoo is working together with Canadian Wildlife Service, Parks Canada and the International Crane Foundation to determine whether we can use high-resolution satellite imagery to monitor whooping cranes. Channel your inner conservation researcher and join us in testing this new monitoring method!
