West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne virus that causes disease in humans, horses, and birds. WNV spreads to people through the bite of an infected mosquito, and it can make people sick and even cause death. WNV is common in the United States, especially in California, and is a problem that is here to stay. The best way to prevent WNV is to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Mosquitoes often get WNV from birds. Dead bird reports are one way of tracking where WNV could be spreading. You can help the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) track WNV in California by reporting dead birds. Did you know? West Nile virus is the most common and serious vector-borne disease in California. There have been more than 7,000 human cases and over 300 deaths reported in California since 2003. The mosquitoes that spread WNV are found throughout the state. There have been 2 new WNV positive human cases reported in California last week from Glenn (1) and Merced (1) counties. This is the first WNV positive human case from Glenn County this year. 1 WNV-related fatality has been reported to CDPH this year from Los Angeles (1) county. 46 human cases from 12 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2020. There were 40 new WNV positive dead birds reported in California last week from the following counties: Contra Costa (7), Los Angeles (16), Orange (7), Riverside (1), Sacramento (4), Tulare (1), and Yolo (4). 211 dead birds from 17 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2020. There were 265 new WNV positive mosquito samples reported in California last week from the following counties: Butte (2), Contra Costa (3), Fresno (27), Kern (8), Kings (11), Lake (1), Los Angeles (62), Madera (8), Napa (1), Orange (31), Placer (4), Riverside (5), Sacramento (9), San Joaquin (43), Shasta (1), Stanislaus (32), Tulare (13), and Yolo (4). This is the first WNV positive mosquito sample from Napa County this year. 1,982 mosquito samples from 27 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2020. There were 4 new WNV positive sentinel chickens reported in California last week from Los Angeles County. 60 sentinel chickens from 7 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2020. There have been 2 new WNV positive horses reported in California last week from Butte (1) and San Bernardino (1) counties. These are the first WNV positive horses from Butte and San Bernardino counties this year. 10 horses from 8 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2020.
