Salam-Hello in Arabic! I (Sal) have an uncle and cousin that both live in the Middle East. In fact, many Filipinos work overseas over in this region because of the vast employment opportunities that fit their hard working skills as nurses, maids, etc... My uncle lives in the United Arab of Emirates and my cousin lives in Saudi Arabia. These two were probably my first relation to the Middle East region.

It wasn't until college-UMM, when I really encountered and meet people from the Middle East. One of the presidents of the International Student Association (student organization) was of Middle Eastern-Kuwaiti background. From him and others that attended UMM, I became more educated and exposed of this unique culture living in the Midwest-Minnesota.

Since meeting these guys and the continued exposure while at this rural college town, I've been interested in meeting people from this region. I continue to meet more after living in Morris-Motown through the college. For example, while attending the Summer Institute of Ministry Training School-Morris Community Church, we had a teacher one week that was a missionary in Lebanon. He shared some stories that made the inner-city violence of America look small.

Arab?

I was watching this movie and found out Iranians are not Arab (just like Guatamalans are not Mexicans), so I decided to do some re"search" on this...

Arab League, Middle East NewsFact Monster, historyLeague of Arab States

I then began to reflect on the Bible and remembered how Persia (Iranians) was an enemy of Babylon (Iraq), which explains the dispute between Shiites and Sunnites. When the national borders of Iraq was drawn, "ignorant imperialists" did not take this difference of ethnic groups into consideration.

Genesis 11
"From Shem to Abram
...26 After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

27 This is the account of Terah.
Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot. 28 While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land of his birth. 29 Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah. 30 Now Sarai was barren; she had no children.
31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.
32 Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran....

. "Abraham (Hebrew: אַבְרָהָם, Standard Avraham Tiberian ʾAḇrāhām Ashkenazi Avrohom or Avruhom ; Arabic: ابراهيم‎, Ibrāhīm ; Ge'ez: አብርሃም, ʾAbrəham) is a man featured in the Book of Genesis and an important figure in several monotheistic religions. Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions regard him as the founding patriarch of the Israelites, Ishmaelites and Edomite peoples. He is widely regarded as the patriarch of Judaism and monotheism. Abraham means "Father of Nations" - "Av" is Hebrew for "Father", and "Raham" is the Arabic for "Nations or Multitude". Also considered to mean "High Father", coming from the Aramaic words "Aba Rama"
Abraham's father was Terah, the grandfather was Nahor. Abraham's brothers were named Nahor and Haran.[2] According to Genesis, Abraham was brought by God from Mesopotamia to the land of Canaan. There Abraham entered into a covenant: in exchange for sole recognition of YHWH as supreme universal deity and authority, Abraham will be blessed with innumerable progeny. According to Jewish tradition (based on the Anno Mundi era), Abraham lived AM 1948–2123 (1812 BCE to 1637 BCE). Christian traditional dates are about 2000 BCE to 1825 BCE.[3]
Judaism, Christianity and Islam are sometimes referred to as the "Abrahamic religions", because of the progenitor role Abraham plays in their holy books. In the Jewish tradition, he is called Avraham Avinu or "Abraham, our Father". God promised Abraham that through his offspring, all the nations of the world will come to be blessed (Genesis 12:3), interpreted in Christian tradition as a reference particularly to Christ. ..."

"...Haran was the city which Abraham's family settled in after leaving Ur of the Chaldees. Abraham's father Terah took Abraham and his brother Nahor with him to Haran following the death of his son who coincidentally was also named Haran. Haran was Abraham's brother and Lot's father (Lot was Abraham's nephew). After staying in the city of Haran for sometime the Lord called Abraham to leave the ancient city and to travel to the land of Canaan, just south of Haran. Canaan was to become his inheritance and was passed on to his descendants, the Children of Israel. ..."

IshmaelFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"...Ishmael (Hebrew: יִשְׁמָעֵאל, Standard Yišmaʿel Tiberian Yišmāʿêl; Arabic: إسماعيل‎, 'Ismā‘īl) is a figure in the Torah, Bible, and Qur'an. Jewish, Christian and Muslim believers regard Ishmael as Abraham's eldest son, born of his wife Sarah's hand maiden Hagar (Genesis 16:3). Though born of Hagar, according to Mesopotamian law, Ishmael was credited as Sarah's son (Genesis 16:2)[1] According to the Genesis account, he died at the age of 137 (Genesis 25:17).[2].."
Both Jewish and Islamic traditions consider Ishmael as the ancestor of northern Arab people.[1]Judaism has generally viewed Ishmael as wicked though repentant.[1] Judaism maintains that Isaac (the father of the Jewish people) rather than Ishmael was the true heir of Abraham.[3] The New Testament contains few references to Ishmael. In Christian biblical interpretation, Ishmael is used to symbolize the older—now rejected—Judaic tradition; Isaac symbolizes the new tradition of Christianity.[1] Islamic tradition, however, has a very positive view of Ishmael, giving him a larger and more significant role. The Qur'an views him as an Islamic prophet. According to the interpretation[citation needed] of some early Islamic theologians whose view prevailed later, Ishmael was the actual son that Abraham was called on to sacrifice, as opposed to Isaac...."

Jewish views
The people of Sodom were seen as guilty of many other significant sins. Rabbinic writings affirm that the Sodomites also committed economic crimes, blasphemy and bloodshed[1]. One of the worst was to give money or even gold ingots to beggars, after inscribing their names on them, and then subsequently refusing to sell them food. The unfortunate stranger would end up starving and after his death, the people who gave him the money would reclaim it...
Christian view
...This idea is paralleled in the Gospels when Jesus compares an inhospitable reception to Sodom:
If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.—Matthew 10:14-15"
Islamic view
The major difference between the Islamic view of Lot and the Biblical version of Lot is that the Bible includes later stories of Lot's incestuous relationship with his daughters, which are implicitly denied in Islam. Since Lot is referred to as a prophet of God,[5] and Islamic prophets are considered to never break God's law, Lot would not have had such an incestuous relationship..."

In contrast to the sea, a well represents a higher and more living source of truth and understanding. Specifically, a well represents spiritual truth, or the Word of the Lord.
What, then, is the conflict here? And how is it resolved?
"Beersheba," Swedenborg tells us, "represents merely human rational ideas that are allied with religious teachings." In the Lord’s life, the treaty of Beersheba meant that he could use all he had learned from religious leaders, and make it a part of his ministry to the people. And in the Gospel story, we find him very effectively using his thorough knowledge of the Scriptures and of Jewish customs in preaching his own higher message....."

-JUDAISM

Bible cited as Israel's claim on JerusalemPosted: 17 May, 2010 mnnonline.org
"Israel (MNN) ― Israel's leader is quoting the Bible to stake claims on Jerusalem as being the nation's capital. Last week Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a parliamentary session commemorating Israel's capture of East Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 war that "Jerusalem" and its alternative Hebrew name "Zion" appear 850 times in the Old Testament--Judaism's core canon. Citing such ancestry, Israel calls all of Jerusalem its "eternal and indivisible" capital -- a designation not recognized abroad, where many powers support Arab claims to East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Netanyahu didn't talk about them being given Jerusalem in 1948 or mention any of the wars they had won.
Tom Doyle, Middle East expert with E3 Partners, says Netanyahu quoting the Old Testament is profound. "The Bible is clear on whose capital it is, and Israel has shown that they're willing to share it. But I think this is the first time I've heard bold statements like that, giving the sole justification for Jerusalem from the Bible."
Muslims reject the Bible, says Doyle. "Muslims say the Scriptures are corrupted, and they don't trust them. They may honor Jesus in some ways and say some things are good in the Bible," but they don't believe the Bible.
Ironically, Jerusalem isn't mentioned in the Koran. Doyle says Jerusalem only recently has been known as a Muslim holy city. "We don't see that until the 60's when Palestinian Leader Yasir Arafat coined that expression that Jerusalem was Islam's third-holiest city. Until then, there was a big debate on what was the third-holiest city."
While Netanyahu's citing of Scripture is unprecedented, Doyle says Palestinian Christians may face difficult days ahead. "Arab Muslims would know that they read the Bible and take the Bible literally. And so when you've got the Israeli Prime Minister saying that about Jerusalem, Arab believers will feel some heat."
Palestinian Christian are caught in the middle of this political turmoil. They're opposed by Israelis because they're Palestinians. Their called Zionists by Palestinian Muslims because they are so peaceful.
While tensions are high in the region, Doyle says, "We are not seeing any cutbacks because of the political tension. In fact, we're seeing exactly the opposite. We're seeing more believers, more disciples, and more churches planted throughout the Middle East."
E3 Partners provides training and resources to Christians in the region. Doyle says, "$30 a month can sponsor a Middle East leader. And, that will help him get the tools and the training he needs to be more effective within the region."

Many surprised by genetic and cultural links between Palestinians and Jews

-Chromosome for the Cohen, “priestly” line, shows up in Palestinians By Mark EllisSenior Correspondent, ASSIST News Service Friday, September 16, 2011
"GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO (ANS) -- In some of the dry and dusty Palestinian and Bedouin villages they still circumcise their boys after the seventh day. Hidden away in some Palestinian homes are Jewish mezuzahs and tefillin. Some older residents can recall lighting candles on the Sabbath.
“Many of the Palestinians know it, but it’s not politically correct to acknowledge this publicly among Muslims,” says Steve Hagerman, founder of Turkish World Outreach. “There are two houses of Israel in the Holy Land: one aligned with the West and primarily secular or Jewish and the other aligned with the East and primarily Islam.”
When the northern kingdom of Israel was deported by the Assyrians in 745-702 B.C., most were sent to the east, Hagerman notes. After the Roman conquest, many Jews were carried away as slaves or fled to the west. “Many of the people in southern and central Italy are of Jewish origin, because so many slaves were carried away by the Romans to big estates in southern Italy.”
Hagerman cites a documentary that appeared on Israeli television in 2009 that established many common links. The documentary, produced by Nissim Mossek, quotes Rabbi Dov Stein, secretary of the New Sanhedrin, “It becomes clear that a significant part of the Arabs in the land of Israel are actually descendants of Jews who were forced to convert to Islam over the centuries,” he says. “There are studies which indicate that 85% of this group is of Jewish origin.”
Genetic studies have confirmed the connection. Ariella Oppenheim PhD, a researcher at Hebrew University and the Hadassah Medical School labs, did several important studies in 2000 and 2001. She was able to demonstrate common origins and a number of surprising relationships. Oppenheim established that both the Palestinians and the Jews descended from the Kurds of Babylon, homeland of the patriarch Abraham.
Even more surprising, she found the Ashkenazi Jews from Europe are genetically closer to the Palestinians than Middle East Jews.

...Some experts see their clumsiness as the product of nondenominational churches lacking the resources for proper training programs. Others suggest that the culprits are "short termers" who don't stay in the region long enough to witness the cycles of retribution their confrontational styles can touch off. Says Robert Seiple, the State Department's Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom until 2000 and himself an Evangelical: "There is a lot more good than bad. The major denominations get it right more than wrong. But what I discovered is that well-intended people have in many, many cases eroded the message they were trying to communicate through inappropriate methodologies. Persecution results, and there are times you wish they had stayed home...."...

10/40 Window

....A missions strategist named Ralph Winter suggested in 1974 that Christians turn their attention from areas already exposed to Christ to "unreached people groups" who had never heard the Gospel. The plan held special allure for those who read literally another verse in Matthew suggesting that when every nation is reached, the long-awaited end times can commence. In 1989 Argentine-born evangelist Luis Bush pointed out that 97% of the unevangelized lived in a "window" between the 10th and 40th latitudes. This immense global slice, he explained, was disproportionately poor; the majority of its inhabitants "enslaved" by Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism and, ultimately, by Satan....

..."Henry" and "Sarah" practice a kind of evangelism that might satisfy the staunchest agnostic. In the early 1980s they arrived in the North African country where they serve as missionary-team leaders. "We didn't want to run through, do our thing and preach," says Sarah. "We wanted to live." They founded an adventure-travel business and made friends. They talked sports and taxes and children with their neighbors, went camping with them and gathered with them on Muslim feast days. They didn't hide their faith, but they didn't press it on others, so when a friend's friend who had taken a Christian correspondence course approached them on behalf of his family, they shared Christ on his terms. "They pursued us," Henry insists. The two clans grew close and still are; eventually several of the Muslims embraced Christ. To tentmaking theorists, this is "relationship evangelism." Henry prefers to speak of the difference in connotation between two Arabic words, tansir and tabshir. "Tansir means to coerce people to change their religion," he explains. "Tabshir means to share, to be a witness."...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INTERNATIONAL MINISTRY RESPONDS TO TERRORIST ATTACK

Wayne, Pennsylvania (ANS) -- Officials at this Christian Satellite Television Ministry to the Middle East and North Africa recently joined with their Arab Christian counterparts on staff throughout the Middle East in reaction to the tragic terrorism attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

"It is clear that when the disaster hit us here in America, it also struck deep into the hearts of fellow believers all over the Middle East and North Africa," said SAT-7 North America President Ron Ensminger. "We have had such profound expressions of sympathy for American Christians from Arabic fellow believers that I want to pass some of them along as encouragements." [NOTE: a partial text of these quotes is attached to this release].

"At the same time, we have heard positive expressions of support for our ministry in the Middle East from many American Christians. They are encouraging us to continue our efforts to send the Good News of Jesus Christ into homes all across the region with our Bible-based, Arabic-language programming. It would be easy to allow Tuesday's events to turn our hearts towards bitterness to all foreigners," said Ensminger, "Fortunately, Christians are telling us that our job has never been more important and they have specifically expressed compassion and mercy to Christians living in Arab lands."

"We intend to continue our efforts in the aftermath of this terrible terrorist attack and we welcome those who choose to join us," said Ensminger. "We are grateful to our Christian partners who have voiced their encouragements during these difficult days, both our neighbors here and overseas. The joy of the Lord is our strength!"
