Magellan eXplorist HACKMagellan eXplorist HACK !!I like messing around with things, and I had a bit of time to wastetonightso.... I decided to see if I could turn my GC into a 310. Well it turns out you can, and here's how...

** Disclaimer:
The procedure I will describe works for me, but you are the one that ultimately takes the risk while crossflashing your GPS. This likely will void your warranty although as it turns out it is possible to turn it back into a GC easily enough.

HACK the Magellan eXplorist GPS

1-First thing to do is make sure you are running gc firmware version 1.7, I dont know if this is important, but mine was at 1.7 when I started so I will recommend the same.1.7 can be found here
http://support.magellangps.com/support/index.php?_m=downloadsamp;_a=viewdownloadamp;downloaditemid=265amp;nav=0,18,24,62

2-Connect your GC to your computer and update to 1.7 if you haven't already, also make a backup copy of the entire contents of your GC (you can use this later to restore if you have to)
3-You will need to get a copy of the 310 firmware version 1.12 and version 1.17Both files can be found here hosted by cacher Alloryhttp://gawisp.com/perry/magellan/
eXplorist 310
eXplorist 310 firmware updatehttp://support.magellangps.com/support/index.php?_m=downloads_a=viewparentcategoryid=24pcid=18nav=0,18

4-Both files are a self extracting executable, but we dont want to run them we want to take the files from them, so you will need toextract their contents to a separate folderfor each one using winzip or winrar etc.
5-For some reason my GC will not run 1.17, it keeps saying "restarting to improve performance" and it gets stuck in an infinite reboot loop so that is why we run 1.12, but we do need a couple files from 1.17 (at least I think we do, you could try skipping this step but it is something I did so I know that it works). In theextracted files of 1.17 go to the folder titled "copy group 5" and copy the 4 filesfrom there into the root folder of the GC. ( the root folder is not a folder titled root, its just the main folder as in D:\ or whatever drive letter your gc shows up as, but I will call it D:\ for the rest of this)
6-Disconnect the usb and let it reboot, it will say installing update and will eventually reboot but it will still be a GC, thats good.
7-Reconnect the usb. Make sure you have a backup of every file on your GC, and then completely delete everything on it, do not unplug the usb at this point or there could be serious trouble. Create a folder in the root of the GC called "App"
8-Now we will need to browse to the extracted files of 310 v1.12, and start copying some over;
-- in copy group 1, transfer the demo folder to D:\App\
-- in copy group 2, transfer all 6 files to D:\App\
-- in copy group 3, transfer the one (QtCore4.dll) file to D:\App\
-- in copy group 4, transfer all 7 files to D:\App\
-- in copy group 6, transfer all files to D:\App\
-- in copy group 8, [optional] transfer the (Geocaches) folder to D:\ (this may create itself but just to be sure put it there any way)

9-Now you are ready to disconnect, it will reboot and ask for language settings etc, and may reboot once on its own, but you now have a green Magellan 310
10-The basemap is now gone, but you can reinstall a new one using the Vantage point software as it has one included. You can also install various other free maps from websites likehttp://www.magicmaps.ca

Have fun!

Side note, when you have it hooked up to vantage point it will probably tell you that a newer software version is available. Dont bother running the update as it will just fail anyway. Even though it is now a 310, the installer will throw up an error saying that it isnt a 310.

If at any time you want it back to being a gc, just delete everything on it and copy your backup files back onto it.2 comments: Magellan GC Hack as a 310 No comments: Free GPS mapshttp://www.gpsfiledepot.com has a pretty extensive selection of free maps. I have loaded them on my old Garmin Etrex Legend CX. I wonder if they would be able to be loaded on the GC somehow. I am going to try the conversion soon. I don't use the map on GC anyway because it doesn't give turn by turn so it's really just a reference - but I have my iPhone 4 so I generally have full mapping and satellite capabilities on that if I need a visual. The GC gets me to the GZ once I'm already in the vicinity. No comments: free GPS Basemap
I did the procedure as described and everything went well! I did some more research and realized that there are all sorts of licensing issues with converting Garmin maps to Magellan, etc. so that seems like it's not really an option. HOWEVER - I did find this site: http://maps4me.net/b...maps_explorist/ that has a lot of downloads for Magellan devices. It looks like there is a small yearly fee for downloads over a certain size or something, but it's a start.

I am intent on getting satellite imagery on my GC/310! No comments: Triton500 update from magellanA half decent basemap can be found in the Triton500 update from magellan. Just download the one you want or both, (NA or EU), then unpack the files and look in the \HDD\MAP_DATA\ folder and take the mgi file from there. Drag the map onto Vantagepoint and use the install maps button to send it to your gc/310. Or you could just place it in the \Maps\ folder of the gps manually. This is a much better basemap than the "detailed basemap" that comes with vantagepoint .

Tried it, it's only 9mb, the map for the GC is over 1gb; had a larger map (610?)installed, but menu had an x thru it.No comments: The eXplorist Series Xplorist GC 2.2" screen; high-sensitivity SiRFstarIII GPS; dedicated to geocaching; paperless geocaching; pre-loaded world map of major roads, parks, rivers, lakes, major city points; waterproof to IPX7 standards; picture viewer; 18 hours battery life; compatible with VantagePoint; saves 1 track, 500 waypoints, 10,000 geocaches

I had hoped to sync Geocaching GPX files with my Magellan GPS, however the VantagePoint software would not load and kept Crashing. After connecting the eXplorist handheld GPS device with the USB cable and trying to launch or start the VantagePoint software with a Windows 7 64bit I was unable.

I have read many forums and information website. In summary they all discuss problems with Windows 7 64bit running the VantagePoint software Crashing with Magellan GPS.

Conclusion: This is a crap software. The Poorest I have ever seen/used.

No comments: Factory Reset Magellan eXploristThe GC has a firmware emergency mode, that can be accessed by:
1) remove batteries, replace with fresh batteries
2) plug into USB while still off.
3) Press "UP", "Menu", and "Power" AT THE SAME TIME until the spin-wheel appears, then release

This will put you into a mode where you access the GC's files from your computer. From here you can restore your unit back to "official" firmware. No comments: Magellan eXplorist upgradeThis Russian site has all the details needed to upload new maps to a Magellan eXplorist 300, 200, or 100. Inside the battery case are four pads that can be used for serial communication. You will have to use a MAX232 to shift the voltage levels. Since this occupies the battery space youll need to provide power as well. This can be tapped from a USB port. Once the cable is built you can download waypoints using OziExplorer: http://www.oziexplorer.com/

This iste is down. Cant download.

So the site contains malicious javascript (So says my AVG) and its pretty useless overall. Seriously? All theyre really telling you is how to create a max232 circuit, to use a voltage regulator(3.3v), and to use OziExplorer.

explorist 110 hackI was able to copy the basemap from my magellan explorist 500 to my magellan explorist 210 by copying and pasting the basemap folder.
Updated: July 2013

Exchange the Basemap On the Magellan eXplorist 110 you will need to edit the file Touch.mdc and insert the map name in there. You will find more details on this topic and how to exchange the basemap here: Exchange the Basemaphttp://maps4me.net/howto-basemap-en Firmware Version 2.13 or later required for map display

#46 -basemap from version 2.13http://maps4me.net/basemaps/basemap-canadaJust did this trick again, this time from version 2.13 to a 310. Then I took the basemap from version 2.13 and put it in. I now have a fully detailed map on the 310 conversion

#53 -National Geographic TOPO maps
Has anyone been tried this with National Geographic TOPO maps from their software? I was thinking of buying the New York New Jersey version to print paper maps, but it would be a great perk if it can also load maps into a GC with this mod.
I also have MOBAC, but still need to learn more about how to use it. Can that load Esri maps? or should I stick to the OSM Terrain maps.
I've worked with both for an online mapping site, and find both good, but sometimes one has strengths over the other

MOBAC for Magellan eXploristhttp://peterdean.co.uk/wpblog/?p=143I did a blog on MOBAC for Magellan eXplorist recently. It's for Ordnance Survey maps, but the process is identical which ever maps you choose.

ADDwaypoints on my MagellanI am just startingnout geocaching and I am not able to put waypoints on my magalin gc.Version 2.15, click on waypoints, click MENU, click ADD WAYPOINT, then choose which you option you want (CURRENT LOCATION, POINT ON MAP, COORDINATES, or PROJECTION. then when your done, there should be a icon on the bottom that looks like an old floppy. click on that will save your waypoint.Another quick way is while on the map screen, hit MENU, then the first option is ADD WAYPOINT, then just click the floppy icon on the bottom to waypoint your current position

"BASEMAP.MGI" to eXploristHeres the basemaphttp://rhamphorinkx.newmail.ru/maps/na_lb112%20(ex_400-500-600_na).rar
http://www.filecrop.com/base-map-mgi-magellan.html

There seems to be a little confusion for some of what happened lets see if I can clarify ;)
I have an exploist 210 it wasnt seeing the waas satellites so I decided to do an update as we know all that is available is the one for the European version, well I forgot to save my basemap and the outcome was a European 210 . So storm180 (THANKS) had a basemap for a 500
I downloaded it from his linkhttp://www.megauploa.../it/?d=EJTNQH03Change the name of the file to BASEMAP.MGIThen copy it to the Explorist internal memory Background maps folderThe computer asks if you want to overwrite the file that is already there click yesWhen finished uploading not sure maybe I got lucky but all went well and it works
Magellan considers basemaps to be propriatary informationThat's because Magellan considers basemaps to be propriatary information, something that they will not give away.
They actively shut down sites that post copies of basemaps. If a unit was still under warranty they would 'upload' a replacement if you send your unit to them. But they don't care about their customers. They will not make it easy for people to WANT to keep their Magellans. Most of their products are now legacy products and are not supported anymore. Magellan has been sold to a foreign company, I don't know what they are thinking.
A GPS without a basemap is like the dark ages of GPS's like the Garmin GPS12...
When it comes to basemaps, there are some that are around 2Megs, and some that are around 14Megs, for the Meridian series.
I think that they are compatable with the Explorists, but the extension has been changes from .img to .mgi. Be sure that you use a basemap of a size that your GPS expects to see, I don't know what happens if you try to load a wrong one.
One could always BUY the Magellan MapSend WorldWide Basemap but one shouldn't have to, that product is not the same as what's on a GPS. I can't remember if it's more or less detailed. Check the Yahoo Magellan_Meridian userrgroup for comparisons.http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=197582

No comments: Convert Decimal Coordinates
10.2. Convert Decimal Coordinates to DDD MM.MMMIf you would like to convert Decimal Coordinates to DDD MM.MMM, take the integer (whole number) - positive is North and East, negative is South and West - and set it aside. The remaining decimals would be multiplied times sixty to get minutes.Example: the Sears Tower in Chicago is located at 41.878928 -87.636415. For the latitude...Start with the number in decimal degreesPositive is north, and take the whole numberThen take the remainder times 60Round to three decimalsTherefore the latitude for the Sears Tower in Chicago is41.87892841.xxxxxx = N410.878928 x 60 = 52.7356852.736N41 52.736Now try the math on your own: Longitude -87.636415 will convert to W087 38.185.To reverse the process, take the minutes portion and divide by 60, then tag it on to the degrees:
W 087 38.185
38.185 60 = 0.636417
tag it onto the degrees to get 87.636417
West is negative:-87.636417
To carry it further to seconds beyond minutes, you do the same thing with the minutes that you did with the degrees. Take the integer off of the minutes and multiply the remaining decimal times 60. That will give you seconds. If you have Degrees, Minutes and Seconds...Start with the seconds and divide by 60. Add the minutes and you'll be in the format that Geocaching uses: H DDD MM.MMMTo take it further to the decimal degrees, divide the minutes (MM.MMM) by 60 and add the decimal to the degrees. That will leave you in the format DDD.DDDDD. Remember, West and South are negative, East and North are positive. Coordinates in the US are N latitude (positive) and W longitude (negative). No comments: HomeSubscribe to:Posts (Atom)
