We worked hard to support our students when they were at home but being in school is the best place for children. We have applied the control measures outlined in the DfE guidance published at the end of the summer term and a rigorous risk assessment is available in the Safeguarding section on our school website. Some of the measures include: year groups arranged in bubbles with their own areas, separate entry/exit points, staggered break and lunch times, additional hand washing stations across the site; enhanced cleaning, extensive signage, windows and doors kept open in classrooms to maintain a circulation of fresh air and students maintaining a social distance from adults in the classroom. The most important measure is that any studentdisplaying Covid-19 symptoms themselves, or in a household where someone is displaying symptoms, (a high temperature, a new continuous cough or a loss or change of smell or taste) should not attend school. If the symptoms develop at school, then parents/carers will be required to collect their son immediately and they must follow the guidance of Public Health England. They should book a test for Covid-19 and inform the school of the outcome. So, when we open, we will be open for all students for all the week. However, things will be different. Collective Worship and Team meetings will take place remotely, extra-curricular activities and detentions will be year group specific, we will be having a remote Open Evening on Thursday 10th September and we may deliver Parents Evenings remotely although this will be confirmed closer to the time. There is also likely to be a restriction on some of the activities when the students return to lessons; for example in subjects such as Science, PE, and Drama. It is vital that when students return they bring their school bag (any colour/style) and equipment to eliminate the need for sharing. This should include: - a large pencil case - ballpoint pens/fine liner pens (blue, black, green and red) - pencils and coloured pencils - pencil sharpener and eraser - 30cm ruler - glue stick - protractor and set square - scientific calculator Students should be dressed in full school uniform however, students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are permitted to wear their Games kit on their Games day. Important dates for the first term 2020-2021 From Monday 7th September 2020 Catering During the W/B 31st August 2020, there will not be any food items available to purchase in school; students are asked to bring their own snacks/drinks which should include a packed lunch for those students in Year 7 and Year 8 on Friday 4th September as this will be a full school day. During the W/B 7th and W/B 14th September, there will be no breakfast items available either before school or during break. There will be meal deal lunch available, which must be pre-ordered and purchased on ParentPay by Thursday 3rd September. The meal deal option (available to all students and staff members) will be either a meat or vegetarian sandwich, which will then be distributed at specific collection points for each year group. Once arrangements for the rest of term have been finalised, we will communicate this to parents/carers. Hygiene All students and staff members will be expected to wash their hands when they arrive at school. There will be hand sanitisers available at all entrances to the site. There will be a strict cleaning regime each day to ensure that all door handles, communal areas, and toilets are continually and repeatedly cleaned throughout the day. We will require all students (unless they are in an organised club or working with a specific teacher) to leave the site promptly each day to ensure we can thoroughly clean all areas in preparation for the following day. Travelling to and from school The government have asked all members of the public to avoid public transport if possible. Interiors of buses and trains are more likely to allow virus transmission than being in the open air. This means that students should walk or cycle to school unless it is essential to take public transport, such as buses and trains. Only Year 7 students will be permitted to use the buses positioned closest to the school at the end of each day. This will be reviewed at the end of the first half term. When you are travelling to school by car, please avoid dropping your son off directly at the school site. This is especially important, not only for the safety of all our students, but to ensure that traffic can keep moving. There is bicycle storage at the front of the school next to the main entrance. Face Coverings As you will have no doubt seen in the media, schools nationwide are doing their best to keep up with the changing landscape of advice being given by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Public Health England (PHE) and the Department for Education (DfE). The updated DfE guidance on face masks now states, Schools and colleges will have the discretion to require face coverings in communal areas where social distancing cannot be safely managed, if they believe that it is right in their particular circumstances. As a result of this new guidance from the DfE on face coverings, the approach at The John Fisher School is as follows: Unless we experience a local lockdown in our area, face coverings remain optional for staff and students If parents/carers wish for their son/s not to wear a mask, this is fine providing that all school rules are adhered to regarding social distancing If parents wish for their son/s to wear a mask in corridors and communal areas, this is also fine again, adhering to the school rules regarding social distancing Staff members will be given the option to wear a face covering Face masks: - must be plain coloured with no patterns - cannot have logos - must be put in a re-sealable plastic bag when not worn - must be worn appropriately - must be washed frequently Any student intentionally misusing a mask would be required to take it off. Who can your son talk to at school? We can appreciate that some students may find it difficult transitioning back to school. There are a number of people these students can talk to: - Tutor - Director of Learning - Chaplain - Inclusion Officer - Mental Health Wellbeing team - Safeguarding team - Teachers - Senior leadership team We fully appreciate that some of the measures we must put in place are not ideal. That said they are essential for it to work well and keep everyone safe.We will constantly be reviewing everything on an ongoing basis based on our experience and on government guidance.
