The Pontifical Jesuit Higher Education Institutions in Rome are the international locus of ecumenical scholarship, biblical research and advanced theological education for the Catholic Church Founded by Pope Pius X in 1909, the Institute is devoted to the advanced study of Sacred Scripture. A branch in Jerusalem was established in 1927, providing a center for archaeological research and study visits to the Holy Land. The first Jesuit university, the Gregorian, was founded by St. Ignatius in 1551 as the Roman College.  St. Ignatius envisioned a university of the nations , for the defense and propagation of the faith and for the training of wise and qualified leaders of the Church and of society. The bull issued by Paul III, Regimini Militantis Ecclesiae, instituted the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) on September 27, 1540 A.D. Prominent Jesuit alumni include: Robert Bellarmine, Aloysius Gonzaga, Christopher Clavius, Bernard Lonergan and Roger Boscovich and many others. The Society is currently characterized by its apostolic work in all levels of education, social justice and the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola.
