Description:

The Pontifical Jesuit Higher Education Institutions in Rome are the international locus of ecumenical scholarship, biblical research and advanced theological education for the Catholic Church Founded by Pope Pius X in 1909, the Institute is devoted to the advanced study of Sacred Scripture. A branch in Jerusalem was established in 1927, providing a center for archaeological research and study visits to the Holy Land. The first Jesuit university, the Gregorian, was founded by St. Ignatius in 1551 as the Roman College.  St. Ignatius envisioned a university of the nations , for the defense and propagation of the faith and for the training of wise and qualified leaders of the Church and of society. Established by Pope Benedict XV in 1917, the Institute is committed to the ecumenical study of the theological, spiritual and liturgical patrimony of the Eastern Churches in union with Rome, and to productive dialogue with related churches.17POPE ALUMNI FACULTY75ALUMNI SAINTS BLESSEDS 689TOTAL YEARS OF SERVICE1149LIVING ALUMNI BISHOPS May Reflection Michael McFarland SJIn our prayer and reflection during Lent, sin inevitably emerges as an important theme.  It is such a pervasive reality in our own lives, both individual and communal, that we can’t do any kind of serious self-examination without acknowledging its influence....24 May, 2021April Reflection Michael McFarland SJIn our prayer and reflection during Lent, sin inevitably emerges as an important theme.  It is such a pervasive reality in our own lives, both individual and communal, that we can’t do any kind of serious self-examination without acknowledging its influence....19 April, 2021March Reflection Michael McFarland SJIn our prayer and reflection during Lent, sin inevitably emerges as an important theme.  It is such a pervasive reality in our own lives, both individual and communal, that we can’t do any kind of serious self-examination without acknowledging its influence....22 March, 2021 Join us to experience the adventure of Jesuit Rome with its academic, spiritual, social and cultural opportunities.10 October 16 October, 2021Rome, ItalyTUITION ASSISTANCETuition assistance for students, particularly those from emerging countries, who need financial assistance to continue their studiesACADEMIC CHAIRSEndowment of Academic Chairs to ensure that programs, salaries and teaching facilities remain commensurate with the schools' status as world-renowned teaching institutionsPRESERVATIONPreservation of antique books and texts in our archives, and accumulation and cataloging of research literature collections in our librariesMAINTENANCE FOR THE FUTUREUpgrading, restoring and renovation of equipment and historic buildings The Gregorian University Foundation was established in the United States in 1972 to raise urgently needed funds for scholarships, academic chairs, libraries and capital improvements for the Pontifical Jesuit Higher Education Institutions in Rome. The Pontifical Jesuit Higher Education Institutions in Rome has been entrusted to the Society of Jesus by a succession of Popes since the founding of the Gregorian University by St. Ignatius of Loyola over 450 years ago The Society of Jesus is the largest religious order of priests and brothers in the world. Jesuits are organized into approximately 80 provinces with over 16,000 members. The current Superior General of the Jesuits is the Very Reverend Arturo Sosa Abascal, S.J. The bull issued by Paul III, Regimini Militantis Ecclesiae, instituted the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) on September 27, 1540 A.D. Prominent Jesuit alumni include: Robert Bellarmine, Aloysius Gonzaga, Christopher Clavius, Bernard Lonergan and Roger Boscovich and many others. The Jesuits have been historically renowned for spiritual formation, education, evangelization and service to the poor in global missionary apostolates since the days of the Counter-Reformation. The Society is currently characterized by its apostolic work in all levels of education, social justice and the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. The Inter-provincial Institutions in Rome are a special mission of the Society received directly from the Holy Father. Ignatius wrote that we should “treat the missions from His Holiness as being most important.” This Congregation [universal meeting of the Jesuits] reaffirms the commitment of the Society to the Houses and Common Works of Rome as an apostolic preference of the universal Society. By giving to the Gregorian University Foundation, you will be supporting the three Pontifical Jesuit Higher Education Institutions as they continue their mission to educate future leaders of the Church.
