It never was valid, at least not for the target group it was aimed at, and that hasn’t changed. There are so many things wrong with the OLPC model that it is hard to know where to begin, but let me try to summarize. One Laptop Per Child initiated an intervention into countries where there are more children than existing national governments education efforts could possibly be effective. In the developing world most teachers are both underpaid, and under prepared [ ]A decade ago, Nicholas Negroponte burst into the imagination of educators and technologies worldwide with a brilliant vision of every child in the developing world using a laptop to learn learning. At the time, this was a revolutionary idea, and it brought forth a seemingly endless stream of commentary, hype, and announcements of countries planning [ ]Consider this: can children in the remotest villages, who can’t even afford proper stationery for school, have access to a top of the line tablet or a laptop for a gamified version of the class exercise? No, but they certainly should. In what is now nothing short of a digital world—considering the pervasive impact of [ ]Educational technology will continue to be implemented incrementally in many parts of the developing world. More rapid uptake and success are unlikely to occur unless five items are addressed – power, Internet connectivity and bandwidth, quality teacher training, respect and better pay for teachers, and the sustainability of implementations. 1.
