HealthThe TelegraphSingle-shot Covid vaccine could be approved in weeks and help protect millions in UKA single-shot vaccine developed by a US company may be approved in time to begin vaccinating millions of vulnerable people in the UK by next month, scientists and Whitehall officials believe. Ministers hope the drug, developed by the pharmaceutical giant Johnson Johnson and which uses similar technology to the Oxford vaccine, could be granted emergency authorisation within weeks. The UK has already ordered 30 million doses of the Janssen vaccine, with the option of 22 million more, and officials believe supplies could arrive in time to help the Government hit its target of vaccinating the four most vulnerable groups by mid-February. If approved by regulators, the Janssen drug would become the third vaccine to be rolled out at scale in the UK after the Pfizer and AstraZeneca jabs. How business is helping the vaccine rolloutThe TelegraphEU approves Moderna vaccine, paving way for 160 million extra dosesThe Telegraph CelebrityHouse BeautifulWhy Kim Kardashian and Kanye West s Calabasas Home May Cause a Major Settlement Conflict if Couple DivorcesThe couple worked with Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt to create this minimalist masterpiece.Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Are Officially OverHarper s BazaarKim Kardashian and Kanye West Are Reportedly Filing for Divorce Imminently Seventeen WorldPopular MechanicsHmm, South Korea’s First Aircraft Carrier Looks Awfully FamiliarIs that you, Queen Elizabeth? Mark Steward, an executive director at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), told the Work and Pensions Committee that criminals can “very easily” create online adverts for fake investments, negating the need to produce glossy brochures or set up fake offices. He said scammers can industrialise this process and run multiple advertisements with various offers on a daily basis. Investment scams vary but usually involve promises of huge, inflation-beating returns which are often claimed to be “guaranteed”. Victims, who could be pension savers looking to build a nest egg for retirement, can lose tens of thousands of pounds when the so-called investment opportunity turns out to be fabricated. Mr Steward highlighted an increase in online advertising of what look like genuine opportunities but in fact are fraudulent or scam-like . After collapsing on Christmas Eve, it was announced on Monday that she’d died in a Los Angeles hospital, aged 65. There were reports across the press, and memories of her best-remembered roles: as Julie Rogers in Charlie’s Angels; in the cult fantasy The Beastmaster; and, of course, opposite Roger Moore in A View to a Kill. Later that day, Roberts’ publicist Mike Pingel – who had announced Roberts’ death and even sent out a press release – retracted the announcement. Tanya Roberts was, in fact, still alive, but in a “dire” condition. It emerged that Roberts’ partner, Lance O’Brien, had mistakenly thought she’d died in his arms. “He went to the hospital, and as he sat in her room she opened her eyes and tried to grab on to him,” reported TMZ, “but her eyes closed and she ‘faded.’” O’Brien was apparently so devastated that he left the hospital without talking to medical staff. He told Mike Pingel that she seemed to “slip away” and that he had “just said goodbye to Tanya”. In a bizarre twist, Lance O’Brien was being interviewed by US TV show Inside Edition when a call came through from the hospital, informing him that she wasn’t yet dead. “Now you re telling me she s alive?” said the choked-up O’Brien, in a moment captured on film. “Thank the Lord.” Obituaries were hastily unpublished and Roberts became a meme as she lay dying in hospital, subject of Bond puns (“You only die twice”) and other gags. A lesson, perhaps, in the perilous expediency of trending topics. But after the premature announcement, her death was confirmed on Tuesday. WorldThe TelegraphHas Keir Starmer messed up Labour s response to Covid? Nobody caresIt’s safe to say that Keir Starmer’s televised address to the nation last night was not the ratings success of Boris Johnson’s the night before, that attracted nearly 25 million viewers. Hardly surprising, given that no one really expects the Leader of the Opposition to be as box office as the prime minister, even at a time of crisis. Nevertheless, expectations in some quarters were high enough to have been dashed when, as usual, the Labour leader chose not to weigh in with savage criticism of the government’s handling of the Covid pandemic and lockdown. To some in Labour’s ranks, this is a frustrating tendency of Starmer’s. Surely an opposition party’s job is to oppose? What benefit does Starmer gain for his party by offering lukewarm support and tepid criticism when there’s a barn load of political advantage to be exploited? And so some words of advice to my former party colleagues: The Labour Party does not matter. Allow me to explain: Nearly three million people have been confirmed as having contracted Covid-19. More than 75,000 people have died as a result. Businesses have been lost, workers furloughed, if not made redundant. The UK economy has been decimated: we’re heading for a calamitous “double dip” recession that is deeper than anything any of us have ever experienced. Tax revenues have dried up while demand for extra Treasury funds to see us through has never been greater. Families have been forced to remain apart, in isolation, children’s education and career prospects have been dealt a hammer blow by the decision to close schools, and poorer children, already at a disadvantage, are guaranteed to fall further behind their class mates. Sorry, what were you saying about the Labour Party’s fortunes? It says a great deal about our political classes that while the country is falling to pieces around them, they’re poring over the latest opinion polls and fretting about the voting intentions for a general election that could be nearly four years away. The New Statesman’s Stephen Bush, who is closer to Labour MPs than most, writes that “The trouble is that many in [Starmer’s] party – and not just his diehard critics – want a more full-throated and sustained approach to opposing the government.” The thing is, of course the business of politics must go on, but that does not mean that the vast majority of the country needs to care about it, given that they have rather more pressing problems to contend with right now than the question of who a thousand carefully selected voters reckon is best suited to be prime minister. Bush is no doubt correct to point out that Starmer’s critics on this score are not confined to Labour’s permanently outraged Left wing; he faces criticism (off the record, naturally) even from the more mainstream parts of his parliamentary party. Bless ’em – they actually think any of this matters! Political manoeuvring, good TV interviews, bad TV interviews, a badly judged tweet, apologies for a badly judged tweet, resignations… Seriously, have any of them even looked outside their window to see what’s going on out there? I’ll go further: it’s not just the Labour Party that doesn’t matter – political parties don’t matter. They’re occasionally useful, every year or so, when local or national elections come around and the labels make it easier for us to make our choices. But they are infinitely dispensable. If any of the main parties stopped existing tomorrow, something else would come along to replace it and few would bat an eyelid. All of which is to say that Starmer has been dead right in his approach, offering broad support for the government and levelling only muted criticism at its handling of the pandemic. Because most people could not possibly care less about who might form a hypothetical alternative government in a parallel universe years from now, and vanishingly few of us will define our political outlook by the response to an unforeseen once-in-a-century event anyway. So Labour hasn’t been able to take political advantage of the pandemic? Well, cry me a river. In what world is that of any importance to anyone while the death count is soaring and the economy and society are struggling to hold themselves together? Maybe the government has made unforgivable mistakes, maybe Labour has all the answers. Maybe the opposite to those two statements is the case. No one cares. Fretting over Keir Starmer’s reluctance to make political capital out of this mess is a perfect illustration of just how detached from reality some of his critics are.Keir Starmer urges Government to establish ‘round-the-clock’ Covid vaccination programmeEvening StandardLabour leader Keir Starmer: We must support the Government on new lockdownEvening Standard EntertainmentDigital SpyHollyoaks star Annie Wallace updates fans on filming amid new lockdown Our stringent anti-COVID policies and procedures work well. WorldThe TelegraphPrince Harry personally affronted by claim he snubbed the Marines, court documents revealThe Duke of Sussex was “personally affronted” by an article published in the Mail on Sunday claiming he had severed contact with the Royal Marines, court documents have revealed. In papers lodged with the High Court, the Duke argued that his reputation was “inextricably tied up with” and “substantially” dependent on his links with the military. He warned that any damage to his credibility could have “devastating effects” by preventing military personnel from seeking help for mental health problems, which he has long encouraged. The Duke is pursuing legal action against The Mail on Sunday despite receiving a written apology over a claim that he failed to maintain contact with the Marines when he stepped back from royal duties. He was forced to give up his honorary military titles, including the role of Captain General Royal Marines, when he left the UK last March. The documents, lodged with the court before the newspaper printed a retraction, state that the article would have caused “huge damage” and “serious harm” to his reputation, particularly in the eyes of military and ex-military personnel who might believe he had “snubbed and turned his back on his comrades.” CelebrityGood HousekeepingKate and William Are No Longer Moving Back to Kensington PalaceIt s a huge break in tradition for the Cambridges.
