CARLISLE COUNTY CONSERVATION NEWS

So far in 2022, your conservation district has been busy! We have secured a grant that allows us to work with the fiscal court to provide 2 different recycling opportunities. The first is our ongoing white goods grant program, which is for any appliance large or small. These can be dropped off at the County Road Garage at 93 West Court Street Bardwell.

The second is a new program for Carlisle County. This is an electronic recycling program which is any TV, cell phones, tablets or other devices, computers, monitors, and charging cords. There is a dumpster at the County Road Garage just for electronics. The purpose of our recycling program is to keep debris out of our creeks and waterways.

In April, the district sponsored the Kentucky Mobile Agricultural Science Center at the Elementary School for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. This is the first time the mobile ag science center has been to Carlisle County in at least a decade. The kids enjoyed learning about seeds and germination along with biodegradable corn products. In this hands-on activity center, they were able to make a living seed necklace and a bouncy ball made from corn products only. It was such a success that the district has already reserved it to return in spring of 2023. 

In upcoming events, the annual Rinse and Return program will be held on Wednesday July 27th. All chemical jugs should be rinsed 3 times, labels removed and taken to the state collector that will be set up at the County Road Dept. Lunch will be provided in the Community Room at the Extension Office. 

The Kentucky Soil Erosion and Water Quality Cost Share Program and the Kentucky Soil Stewardship Program were created to help agricultural operations protect the soil and water resources of Kentucky and to implement their agriculture water quality plans. The program helps landowners address existing soil erosion, water quality and other environmental problems associated with their farming or woodland operation. Applications are being accepted until November 1, 2022. Approval of applications are based on a statewide ranking criteria. Cost share rates are maximum of 75% of the actual cost not the exceed $20,000.00. 

Conservation Board meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at the Extension office. Meetings are always open to the public.

Carlisle County was founded in 1886 and named after John Griffin Carlisle, a Speaker of The United States House of Representatives from Kentucky. The communities within Carlisle County possess distinct characteristics which define the County as a whole. The county’s western border with Missouri is formed by the Mississippi River.
