Book Research Trip to Italy Part 4

My previous posts have shared our adventures in Rome and the museums and churches in Florence. Today, it's all about Pisa!
Our driver left us with an expert guide and Segwayinstructor. Since we were already expert (Ha!) Segway drivers, we didn’t need more instructions, so we hopped on our Segways and began our three-hour tour. It started with aglide through the Piazza dei Miracoli to see the Duomo, Baptistery, and theiconic Leaning Tower of Pisa. WOW! It was another one of those experiences where I turned the corner and there it was. It was breathtaking!
I discovered in Venice that this isn't the only leaning tower in Italy. It's just the most famous. I'm so glad we included Pisa in our Italy tour!

I had to get the typical tourist picture! How'd I do?

Leaving the Piazza, we rode through the shopping district of the Borgo Stretto until we reached the Arno River. Isn't it beautiful? Zipping along the river was a real adventure.

We had a blast and could have easily extended the tour. Ifyou get a chance to jump on a Segway, give it a try. It’s SO much fun!

Monday I’ll share pictures of our trip to the Tuscanywine country.

Happy writing and running, Kathy

Book Research Trip to Italy Part 3

Today, I hope you'll enjoy these pictures from our visit to Florence.
After five days in Rome, weboarded the train for a ninety minute trip to Florence. Our hotel was located ona cobblestone street in center city among centuries our buildings, churches, and museums.

After exploring the city on our ownfollowing our arrival, we were picked up and taken on a scenic journey to Fiesole,a charming town in the hills of the Arno Valley. We returned to the city andtoured the Uffizi Gallery to see masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael,Botticelli, Michelangelo and Giotto. Our guide was extremely knowledge, whichincreased our enjoyment of the tour.

The next morning we were driven upto the Piazzale Michelangelo for an unbeatable view of the city. After enjoyingthe view and taking pictures, we returned to city center and toured the Piazzadel Duomo, including the bronze doors of the Baptistery, Giotto's Bell Towerand the outside of the Cathedral, with its iconic dome designed byBrunelleschi.

Then the highlight of the tour—theAccademia Gallery to see Michelangelo’s David. When I turned the corner and sawthe David for the first time, I almost dropped to my knees. It was one of themost powerful experiences in my life. I couldn’t take my eyes off of the statue.

Tomorrow, I’ll share ouradventure to Pisa.

Book Research Trip to Italy Part 2

More pictures from Rome...
VIP Colosseum Underground Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill: When I first entered the Colosseum, I was blown awayby the size. It was interesting to hear the history and to discover that mostof the destruction occurred because of recycling the materials to use in other buildings.

Tour of the Borghese Gallery:Thegallery houses a vast and diverse collection of sculptures and paintingsproduced by masters such as Bernini, Canova, Caravaggio, Raphael and Titian. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, and I loved hearing about the history of the artists and their paintings.

Exclusive Caesar’s Forum at Night Laser & Light Show: This was a sophisticatedlight and laser show and brought the ruins of the Forum to life – absolutelyfascinating! (Pictures were not allowed during the show.)

Rome Night Segway Tour: This was 2.5 hourtour of Rome’s landmarks, cruising by the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps,Pantheon and Temple of Hadrian. And was a blast!

Yep, I look a bit goofy, but I had so much fun!Tomorrow I'll share pictures from our visit to Florence.
